2011-10-29(A) Jeff T vs JVan German winSee JVan's description. Fun battle with some wild swings of momentum. It was quite eventful and well played by both sides and came down to that damn crew surviving! A nice win for JVan and another fun older scenario where the first 3 turns were spent getting into battle. I liked the fluid nature of this as it allowed the battle to evolve over time (as opposed to starting in firing range). Just when it looked like my Russians have caved his left flank and were set to breakout and exit, he got his reinforcements and it turned into a battle for CVP. Despite the unbalanced ROAR rating, this was a close battle and even after withdrawing my remaining infantry on turn 7, I had advancing fire shots on the Iron Cross crew in turn 8 to try for the win. Fun game.
2011-10-29(D) John Van Natta vs Jeff T German winThe Russian split his attack, sending 4 squads and a commissar to the South with the tanks and remaining infantry to the North. The Southern attack stalled in the face of a squad led by the German 8-1 leader and another mounted in a halftrack and went nowhere. On the Northern flank things went better for the Russian with both Panzer IIIs getting knocked out by the T-34 for the loss of one of his BTs. Notably, however, one of the Panzer III crews survived, which would prove telling later on. The KV-2 blasted my AT gun, crew and assisting squad to oblivion with a 3KIA result just as they pushed their gun into a stone building near the exit area. Before it could act again, the KV was immobilized by my 37L halftrack and was effectively out of the battle. The German 9-2 broke, routed, and then broke again in the face of the T-34 and surviving BT. Ultimately the 9-2 and his squad were eliminated for failure to rout, which left the 37L halftrack and tank crew left to hold the north flank. The halftrack KIA'd a squad via overrun but then was destroyed in CC. On turn 5 I got my reinforcing Panzer IVs. One set up station to the North and the other to the south. The T-34 and BT approached the southern one resulting in the loss of the BT and the PZ IV. The T-34 then rolled boxcars on its startup and became immobilized, which prevented him from wiping out the remaining Germans and padding the VP score. At this point the Russian had enough points to win and started to withdraw in order to preserve his points. He failed to rout a broken squad out of a building that he thought was out of LOS, and my remaining PZ IV KIA'd it which gave me the points I needed to win. It turns out that the surviving tank crew, who survived multiple attacks throughout the game, was the difference in this scenario and I won by 1 CVP.
