The former Yugoslavia was a dangerous place for the Axis. The so called “Occupation Zone” of the Italians effectively acted as a safe haven for the various rebel factions fleeing from attacks by the Germans and Croats. However, the Italians still faced a very hostile pro-communist group under Tito and despite the relatively questionable motivation of the Italians, they found themselves in battle with them. On November 16, 1941, a group of Tito’s partisans attacked and destroyed an Italian supply column, capturing 3 tankettes. These tanks were soon turned against their former owners when the partisan group attacked the Italian garrison at Lastra in Hercegovina.
