By 26 January, the Soviet 297th Tank Rifle Division had finally pushed the Hungarian Vannay Battalion out of the Városmajor. One building that still remained firmly in Hungarian hands was the Siesta Sanatorium located on Városmajor utca just to the south of the park. The building was held by elements of the 3rd Battalion, 6th Regiment of the Hungarian 10th Infantry Division. Late on 28 January, the 29th Rifle Division was able to assemble an assault team appropriate for evicting the defenders from the Sanatorium.
Quick scenario that we played in one setting. Jeff barely defended the sanatorium and made his break for the exits on the bottom of Turn 3. The game came down to two mistakes I made (well one mistake and one half mistake/half bad luck). The first mistake was that I was too cautious with my flanking force that was moving up the south side of the board with the plan to interdict the Alma utca. I had planned to get an LMG up there to prevent a free withdrawal by the Hungarians, but in the course of the game I ended up trying to hard for that force to keep it's concealment and consequently they were not in position when Jeff made his run for it. So I was left on my Turn 4 to push hard up to the O27 rowhouse where Jeff had gathered his troops to prevent the 6VP exiting on his turn. The second key mistake was trying to push the 9-1 leader into a hex adjacent to the building to try to get an extra -1 on my CC roll. There was already 2 res in the hex and the leader broke on the 2(-2) shot. Unfortunately, there were some broken Hungarians behind me which caused the leader to die for FTR. Even worse was the fact that there were two GO 447's in that hex that had survived all fire and were ready to advance in for CC and so when the leader died, they had to take the LLMC which they both proceeded to fail and hence they also died for FTR. Thus, for being greedy trying to get that extra -1 in place and not foreseeing what could happen if the 9-1 broke (FTR/LLMC/FTRx2), I could not stop Jeff from getting 7 VP off board and securing the win. Not sure why this is so lopsided for the Russians here and on ROAR...my guess is that many Hungarian players try to defend the Sanatorium at all costs which is a sure way to lose. Interesting little scenario and quick playing.

As Scott said, very fast-playing scenario that should be over one way or the other by the end of Turn 4. Defending Siesta Sanatorium until the bitter end is bound to be a fool's errand, as the Russians just have way too much muscle. Those two FTs are scary! Russians were extremely cautious on Turn 1 entry, for the most part keeping their concealment, and it was fairly obvious Scott would not be trying for the quick victory. His sneakily positioned 458/LMG/8-1 in the Level 2 hill of S35 was a bit problematic for any repositioning I might want to try between the Sanitorium and the three frontal stone buildings. Drifts were an interesting bit of chrome, but really didn't amount to any material effect on play. Turn 2 saw the 8-1 turn heroic, while the Russians almost entirely booted me out of the front line. They were somewhat slowed down by my two wire counters, but my one minefield attack left them unfazed. I was biding my time for a quick run for the exit, my strategy the entire time. Turn 3 saw me make that break, leaving only my two broken squads behind. I had thought I had my men safely ensconched in the far rowhouse, but the heavy snow which had hindered my shots on the encroaching Russians, helped me in my escape, again hindered me in shooting the pursuing Russians, and they were able to close in much easier than I had anticipated. But as Scott said, his attempt to sneak his 9-1 into the fray seriously backfired, and probably changed the outcome of the game as I was then able to sneak 7 VP off on Turn 4.

Used Hungarian balance. My Russians split forces to circle around and cut off any escape attempts then attacked Fortified building from every side. Slowly forcing dwindling defenders up to finally win in Turn 6 CCPh.

Held building for three turns but escape force around and behind couldnt disengage and escape. I think you either commit to keep building till the end or ensure an escape force will make it off board. My hallf and half approach failed.

Held the vital building till the end of turn three and run enough Hungarians of board for the win.
