To facilitate an overland approach to Narvik, the Allies had landed a battalion of South Wales Borderers, supported by a French ski troop of the just arrived Chasseurs Alpins across the fjord south of Narvik. On 2 May, about 100 Germans made an attack against the beachhead, which was repulsed by the Borderers. The French gradually replaced the British and began to expand the beachhead. Thre prominent heights, held by the Germans, became the next objective.
