2023-09-11 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Nick Faryna | | American win | His arty came down just in time to break up the attack. |
2023-03-19 | (A) Ron Garcia | vs | Darryl M. | | German win | Let me start by saying I really don't like the sniper rule. My friend loves it.
Having gotten that out the way, I thought this scenario was decent. Very dense terrain made movement slow for my Germans. My friend set up some pickets at obvious attack avenues to act as speed bumps. However, due to the mass of units moving towards those guys, a break pretty much meant surrender in the RtPh.
One other thing that slowed my advance was a 9-1/MMG/two squad (sometimes one squad) stack on one of the level 2 hexes. They had great LOS to the massive brush/grain hexes in the middle of the map. This forced my guys to skirt the pine woods on the northern Board 7b/2a join - right into the American OBA.
He got off one good shot breaking a few squads and was ready to pound again when disaster struck for him. As I said earlier, I don't like the sniper rule. One of my squads HOB rallied from an OBA shot and took a pot shot at an American MMG/squad combo on the backside of the hill. I rolled a crummy PTC that would not change a thing. However, my friend rolled a 3 which activated my sniper. I rolled a 1 and the only target that was close was the aforementioned 9-1 kill stack on the hill. Random selection got the 9-1 which in turn caused the two accompanying squads to fail their LLMC. That was pretty much game.
My two HT were in position to get the squads for FTR and their breaking freed up my men to maneuver around the OBA shelling they were about to receive. That left my friend with only two full and two HS in good order while I had almost my entire force, so he called it. Up until that point it was anyone's game. A meaningless PTC caused a sudden end to a hard fought battle. Even though I benefited from it, I still don't like the rule - for the very reason that happened in my game - but my friend still likes it for some reason.
As far as tactics goes, IDK? As the Germans, I took what my friend gave me. I was hoping to avoid the OBA that I knew was waiting for my guys, but my friend called it down almost right on top of himself to good effect. As the Americans I think time is your friend so a fighting withdrawal is probably the way to go. Just be careful and not let isolated pickets get swarmed.
Overall, a decent scenario, but I didn't find it terribly exciting. |

2021-04-15 | (A) Eric Topp | vs | John Fedoriw | | German win
2020-11-10 | (A) Dave Mareske | vs | Rich Domovic | | American win | Early high IFT rolls from a forward defending American group did not slow the Germans down. The Germans had to be fairly aggressive on Turn 6 and the Americans made them pay, but it was too little and too late. Breaking two concealed half squads in a foxhole sealed the deal after the Germans had taken the village on Board 2A. Round Two in the Sioux City Street Fighting Tournament. |
2020-10-23 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Dennis Dowd | | American win | The German sniper killed the American radio operator on the very first roll of the game. The 9-1 American leader with a squad destroyed both half-tracks and then the German advance stalled at the base of the hill, never making their way into the village or breaking enough squads on the hill. |
2019-06-07 | (A) Tom Kearney | vs | Paul Sidhu | | American win | Human Wave 2019. |
2019-06-07 | (D) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Duenskie, Ron | | German win
2019-05-16 | (D) Tom Kearney | vs | Alan Saltzman | | American win | I deployed all but two of my squads and delayed the German advance. A lucky AFV kill with an MG secured my right flank. A timely FFE in the center ended German ambitions. |
2019-04-27 | (A) Tom Kearney | vs | Lindsey Murillo | | German win | I managed to get my Germans to the bottom of the hill without too many casualties. Once there they made a coordinated attack that cleared most of the hill. A key moment saw a concealed 4-4-7 advance into CC with an American 9-1 and pinned 7-4-7, get the ambush, and roll a 3! The US managed to bring in only one FFE. The US had the balance but missed with the Baz. |
2018-07-12 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Magnus Rimvall | | American win | The Germans attacked evenly divided from the north and central parts of the board. Due to the restrictive terrain of the valley, four American half squads were able to hold off the six German squads sent that route. I almost fully deployed for two reasons: 1) To cover as much of the front as possible 2) The nature of the VC. The central assault ran into serious resistance on the first turn, with four of the six squads breaking, and allowing the Americans to actually counterattack. The resultant delay is probably what won the Americans the game. My plan was to hit the Germans hard and then pull back before the German reinforcements arrived, but the counterattack was so successful that my men only ended up withdrawing to the safety of the stone buildings. The Germans thus sent most of their reinforcements up the middle and a fierce firefight developed in the middle of the board. I had repositioned my radio operator in the middle of the action, but he was broken by one of the HTs. When he rallied he came back as a BH hero and, while he still toted his radio around with him, his effectiveness was more as a fighting man. Turn 5 saw what Americans weren't tied up in the village position themselves to strongly guard the path and sunken road area. The Germans attempted to assault this on Turn 6 but were busted up and ended up conceding. This was a very fun scenario with a high replay value. |
2018-04-28 | (D) Andy Goldin | vs | Dirk Beijaard | | American win | Challenging LOS conditions due to the pine forest meant that I, as US defender, had only very limited fields of fire on the ridge itself. Therefore I chose to set up just east of the north/south road on board 7b (250-300m west of the ridge line), with the idea being to try to fight for some time before falling back to the entrenchments on the ridge. I made extensive use of the SSR to deploy nearly all of my squads into half-squads. Even so, I was barely able to cover the entire front due to limited visibility around the level 2 pine woods. Dirk launched his infantry attack in the south, between the 13 grid line and the southern board edge.
Dirk's infantry made good time through the pine woods suffering only limited casualties. I moved back as quickly as I could to the ridge but lost two half squads nonetheless. This meant at the end of turn 2 I was down a squad and Dirk had lost one 447 (due to failure to rout, and the Americans had no facilities to hold prisoners). My observer's first spotting round fell off board.
Turn 3 was decisive. Dirk's decision to attack in strength in the south paid off, has he got four squad equivalents and a leader to the base of the ridge. There they met a HS, MMG & 8-1, which had just moved in the foxhole the turn prior. Some good rolling with the MG broke one squad and pinned another.
The real action proved to be in the north where he chose to land the attack squarely on what he believed to be a dummy counter. I had chosen to leave my northern group forward, and, when I saw we he had planned, I soon regretted it, as it appeared he'd outflank my forward defenders and get to hill 494 before I could.
The half squad he sent in to clear the hex bounced out but my TPBF was ineffective. He moved his MMG team adjacent next, and my Final Fire pinned it. Next he moved a FT HS. Getting desperate, I fired an FPF and got lucky, scoring a K/2, eliminating it with a -2 shot (-1 for FFMO, -1 for possessing an FT). Not one to give up easily, Dirk sent in his second FT team, against which I rolled "snake eyes", killing the leader and breaking the squad. Fire from the halftracks was ineffective. He sent the first HS into CC against mine where I eliminated it outright.
At that point, Dirk no longer had sufficient infantry nor time to make a run for the northern hill nor the buildings, so he conceded the game.
Considering the lack of long range shots and the capricious nature of OBA, the defender has to have some good dice to pull of a win in this one. I ascribe the win to hot dice at the right time as much as anything else. Such is ASL. |

2017-12-09 | (D) Stephen dedier | vs | Reenstra, Dave | | German win | Fun scenario and it seems to be pretty well balanced. I made a few setup errors as the American mostly around the pine woods. The lines of sight in this one are very difficult for trying to make your OBA effective. This we my first time using OBA. I managed to delay the main German force but some critical timing bad die rolls killed my flank for the reinforcements.
Kudo's to Dave, you really can't make mistakes when playing him since his are few and far between and he will come with a great strategy and backup plan. My initial OBA was ineffective but did cause him to detour an attack. My last ditch OBA was brutal on his forces and wiped out 3+ squad equivalents by the time it was over as he had to rout through it.
In the end I lost by not having more MMC than he had buildings. I planned to deploy at the last to increase my odds but one unit broke and another failed to deploy. It was a longshot anyway but that ended it. Fun scenario. |
2017-11-12 | (D) B-E Karlsson | vs | German | | American win | Close one. US OBA extremely successful. |
2017-06-10 | (A) Paolo Cariolato | vs | Lorenzo Panarello | | German win | Lorenzo unfortunately misunderstood my reinforcement entry point, this leaded to a bad observer set up, which caused a very strange game.
This scenario is a very good exercise in fighting retreat. I enjoyed it. |
