Aachen was isolated, but prying the first German city away from the Reich would prove no easy task. Hoping to avoid the nightmare of house-to-house fighting, two battalions were ordered to drive through the heart of Aachen towards the three hills dominating the city to the north. Giving the 2,000 weary defenders no respite, the Americans stepped off at dawn the next day. . .
Attacker: American (3rd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division)
Defender: German (Grenadier-Regiment 48, Volksgrenadier-Division 12)
A big, fantastic and exciting game. I placed rubbles in a row to block tanks from breaking my center. So my PSKs HIP on both wings got 2 Shermans successfully. MG fire from high-rise stone buildings did stalled American offensive.

Americans conceded on second to last turn. 5 squad equivalents had exited, but there was no way to get 4 more off the board in the final turn. German heavy machine gun in a 3-level building wrecked havoc the whole game until it finally malfunctioned on the 3rd to last turn. Psk's turned two Shermans into burning wrecks. Sewer movement was helpful but not decisive. The Shermans missed more often than hit their targets. Used plenty of infantry smoke but should have used more smoke from the Shermans.

The German defense was poorly set up and the Americans were able to advance easily the first two turns. The Germans were able to successfully withdraw a few front line units using the sewers and other cover. With the defense slowly buttressed, the American advance began to slow. A fortunate PF attack wrecked one American AFV and the German AA gun rained down on an American stack ready to pounce. An American MMC had two German MMCs and one German 8-1 prisoner. The American MMC broke under fire. The German MMCs were reduced but the SMC was unscathed. In the CC phase, the SMC and one HS attacked their guards and won. Rearmed, the HS and SMC moved against a 2nd American AFV, survived all DefF and wrecked the AFV in CC. The Germans had the final approaches to the exits covered with MMG and SMC FP and the Americans had too few units remaining to attain a Victory.

With a good schwerpunkt assault I managed to punch into the map but then I became to cocky and got all but one of my tanks hit by PFs and ran into a HMG killstack. The game swayed for a little but then through the blessing of dice I yanked the victory from the hands of the dead germans.

Through a combination of rubble and units (both real and dummies), I dared the Americans to attack in the east. They compromised by coming at me from the east and center. I immediately sprung two HIP traps, killing a squad's worth of Americans. The ambushers would not be much longer for this world, but delay is the name of the game in this one. My AA gun was HIP in the middle and dissuaded the Americans from continuing an assault on that front, instead shifting east. Americans were fairly careful in their advance, protecting their tanks with infantry, and they were first moved on the bridge and gully on Turn 4. Casualties were relatively few on both sides. By Turn 5 they were across, but my westernmost infantry had arrived to bolster the defense. The next few turns would see some furious fighting on the northern half of Board 20. Turn 7 saw the first American tanks go down, one to a PSK shot after successfully OVR my HMG stack, and another to the other PSK while toting a FT rider. But the eastern defenses were starting to crack, with only 1.5 squads between the Americans and their goal. A crucial HoB rally on a DM shot, and the freeing up of both my 9-2 and 8-1 MG stacks to situate themselves to get back into the fight, put me in a much better position to deal with the big Turn 9 American push. Already tenuously close to having the bare minimum VP in position, and with their first couple moves meeting with doom, the Americans called it a day at that point. Great game!
VASL. Good game, Simon took me totally by surprise by attacking strongly down the East flank...On T2 I boxcar'ed both the AA gun (on its first shot!)and one of the HMG. I destroyed them both on subsequent repair attempts. Nearly failed my PMC at this stage. But carried on and then had a good mid game when a lot of US troops were broken and two of the tanks were taken out by a Shrek. On T10 Simon had to try and exit the full 9 squads through an open ground MMG firelane, infantry resid and the threat of an HMG directed by the German 9-2. Didn't quite make it.
