During the night of 5 August, the KPA 4th Guards Seoul Division made its initial assault into the “Naktong Bulge”. The North Koreans pressed forward nearly two miles before the 34th’s commander, Colonel Charles Beauchamp, realized what was happening and ordered the 1st Battalion, under Lt. Col. Harold “Red” Ayres, to counterattack and restore the regiment’s position. The next morning, Ayres led C Company forward, where they encountered North Korean positions in the vicinity of Soesil village. Col. Ayres ordered C Company to seize a series of hills occupied by the KPA northwest of Soesil while he directed 60mm mortar fire in support. C Company was forced to break off the attack and fall back. The remnants took refuge in an abandoned grist mill while Col. Ayres and his staff frantically rushed back on foot to bring up the rest of the battalion. The company fought tenaciously in and around the grist mill, utilizing the .50-cal machine gun mounted on a nearby wreck to spray the surrounding hills.
Attacker: North Korean (3rd Battalion,16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Guards Seoul Division)
A neat little scenario that could be very dicey. The HMG was unable do any damage to a North Korean squad on the hill so routing units became problematic and then the Americans were overrun. Only the 9-1 leader was manning the HMG at the end and the 7-0 jumped him in CC and rolled a "2" sealing the victory for the NK.

Americans held off a last-gasp desperation charge by the Norkos to hold R9 for the victory. My 60mm went on a rate tear on Turn 1 getting off 6 or 7 shots and breaking at least two commie squads but then succumbed to the ammunition shortage SSR and malf'ed, not to return for the rest of the game. My opponent did a nice job of advancing towards the victory building without giving my 0.50cal any juicy shots. The Americans were getting squeezed back in their perimeter but managed to hold the high ground around the mill. On the next-to-last turn, a throw-away shot at a broken green American squad on the hill resulted in a MC. My opponent says right before I roll "Just don't HOB" and bam, snakes! The pathetic, broken 546 battle-hardens into a veteran unbroken 666 and made the final turn even more of a reach for the North Koreans than it was going to be already. Pretty basic scenario and fairly static for the US, but a good introduction to Korea as it doesn't really use many special rules except for some terrain mods (paddy fields and light woods).

My opinion that the attacker should win much more often than not was proven correct in elementary fashion. Setup a unit at each of the compass points to mess with routs, place the sniper on board edge to hopefully get lucky on the HMG, pick a point to Schwerpunkt, and go. Having played this as the defender before I know just how painful and boring it is. This was over in 2.5 Turns. I hope to never play this again.

Al defended with the US forces and my NK guys attacked. I was able to approach the objective area from the right, behind the hill. Other units provided over watch fire from a hill to the US front. The .50cal was unable to maintain any rate of fire and the half squad manning the 60mm mortar was broken. The attack on the right cleared that hill and managed to get into assault position. However, a good fire phase from the US delayed the pending attack. Once my troops were in position on the right the ones in the center closed on the objective. The Americans fell back to the stone building to rally, but decided to return to their sangars. The NK fire then broke all but a US half squad and Al conceded. My attack went relatively well and I lost few troops. Al mis-read the victory conditions and thought that the hex containing the wreck was my objective.

Americans caught best NK leader and two squads moving in the open in bypass and took out the entire stack. NKs were not able to recover.

I massed my forces on the blind side of the .50 cal but didn't keep anything on the other side to keep the US forces 'honest' fun intro to Forgotton War.

I'm very surprised at the bias toward the Americans in this one as I think they should have a rough go of it in most cases. Not being able to move the .50 is a big disadvantage and the Koreans can set up to make their routing almost impossible. This one is way too small and dicey for my tastes.

Dan's North Koreans attempted a mass Schwerpunkt from the south and through the gully complex. Lucky dice and a solid performance from my 50 CAL helped my Americans win the day.

Wow, what a match! Dave's forces were quickly underwhelmed by my first volley: 6, 6. So much for a fire base. On to plan 2!
I was able to break one of his squads, so he came in for the rescue with an 8-0. I caught him in a 12-2 shot, and of course made him go heroic!
That was key, because combined with the -1 leader on the HMG, he was able to sweep the fields of resolute Koreans.
I did get into CC with him on his .50 cal and roll "1, 1", but his shot back took me out.
In the end, he was able to keep me out of the victory building.
It could have gone either way. Great match!
