The Soviets occupied a small bulge on the west side of the Don River centered on the small town of Kotovskiy. Daily, both sides launched small attacks to expand their position or to recover what had just been lost. Tired of the back and forth, and knowing that the Don defense needed to be an established position before the mud and snow came, the Germans and Italians together planned a combined pincer assault towards Kotovskiy. The Germans would attack from the right with both Infanterie-Division 79 and Panzer-Division 22, while the Italians attacked from the left.
Attacker: Italian (Val Chiese Alpini Battalion, Sforzesca Division and 67th Tank Battalion with Vestone Alpini Battalion)

Draw
Draw because had to pack up before finishing at end of turn 5. Italians had one turn left, had Control of one of two VC bldgs with melee ongoing in both.
Also brought tanks through flank woods risking bog with good success. Still was relatively lucky in VBM freezing multiple russkys without ever getting flamed by a MOL and finding the ATG which broke in IF without taking a tank.

Pushed a bit too hard 2nd turn after a very slow first turn and managed to get most of my North forces broken. Rallied but made it really tough to get to the VC Buildings in time. Had slight chances but could not do it. One tank who tried the woods bogged. Rest went down center road, all eventually were destroyed or recalled. AT Gun was where I thought it would be.

Tournament play gave Russian balance. Diced for sides. Russian defended up front with ATRs on both sides of middle road. Four Italian tanks went up the middle. Everything else went up the Italian left. Russians had bad luck with TK rolls from ATR and MOL attacks; never destroyed one. Much VBM locking happened.

The Italian tanks didn't get into the game quick enough, choosing to pincer through the wood edges. By the time the final push came the buildings were too strongly defended. Use of hand-to-hand, as per the deluxe rules heavily favoured the Russians who managed a couple of lucky ambushes which really swung the battle.

Derek had set up strongly on the Italian Left, on top of the hill and slowed me down a lot, I pushed two tanks through the woods on both flanks and sent two up the middle. The latter found the Russian ATG at the crossroads and both were lost...Italian shooting was poor but MC and Rallies were amazing! - 3 HOB with 2 squads and a leader hardening and a hero created! But it wasn't enough, I got the remaining tanks close up to provide fire support and three went down to molotovs! Then the Russian HMG went on multiple rate tears to decimate the attackers and I called it at the end of T4! Cracking scenario tho and I would happily play again :)

Italian win
I was lucky enough to get to play Ken Dunn the scenario designer on this. And he fully disclosed that beforehand. This is a fun one. Those Italian tanketts can run all over the place. I was not prepared for a full fledged assault on my right through a trail break.
My Russians fought hard falling back to the town but were overrun and fighting for the buildings by turn 4.
Through some miraculous die rolls I was able to recapture one of the buildings in the bottom of turn 5 but my lonely squad had to face down 4 tank shots before he took IFT and broke to be forced into surrender and end the game.
I felt pretty good just getting to turn 5.
