During a lull in assaults during the second week in October 1942, the Germans massed for a major push toward the Volga River in Stalingrad’s industrial center. The new offensive kicked off on 14 October, aimed at both the Tractor Works and the Barrikady Factory to the south. Large numbers of German troops and tanks were supported by extensive artillery fire and Stuka attacks. Russian soldiers fought with grim determination in and around the major factories, but were inexorably pushed back by the sheer power of the German assault. The decision was made to split the Russian forces in the two key factory areas in half, thus making reinforcements much more difficult between them. Standing in the way of this task was the Brickworks Factory. The only fresh German formation available, the 305th Infantry Division, was committed to the attack to split the two factory areas. Recognizing the threat to their west bank defenses, the Soviet High Command released the 138th Rifle Division and its lead elements began crossing the Volga during the night of 15 October.

Russians put up a stout defense and getting lots of help from their AT gun, which CH'ed one of the STUGs and broke an entire stack of Germans. Dashing Germans on the final turn were gunned down and the Russians held on. I play tested this scenario a fair amount in development, but this was my first playing of it. Great scenario.

I was Russian defender against Germain attacker. Had 1 AT Gun (45LL) and 4 ATR + MOLs. Germain was somewhat timid in his attack of Russian defense of 3 factory buildings. German took out the defense at the Fortified building with a Critical hit by a Stug inverting the TEM to -4. I got one of his Stugs with a side shot while turning to get out of AT Gun fire lane. Defense did well overall, and Germain had to try to seize the 3 control buildings on the last turn with a last-ditch suicide rush. I was able to hold onto the final center building with one leader and a squad to win. Barely.

Managed to create some deception using the dummy counters to draw some German forces away initially then Fortified building tied up forces longer than Germans could eventually afford to waste. Not enough to overtake the final VC.

2020 Street Fighting Tournament (round 1). The Germans pushed hard down the center and made steady progress. The German advance was helped by poor Russian dice at key moments. The Russian were only able to get off one MOL attack which broke their own squad. The AT Gun never got rate and two hits were 12's. The Germans ended the game with two and a half squads and the 9-2 prisoners. The final turn saw the AT crew and the Commissar rule fate on MC leaving a sole Russian squad to fend off the remnants of the 305 alone. A fun scenario against a fun opponent.

Germans did a three prong attack, the center and left pretty much collapsed, but the right with the two StuGs were able to overwhelm the Russian defenders. Not many Soviet survivors to tell the tale.

Although the Germans moved up to the objective area with very few losses, the dice favoured the Russians, causing the Germans to have many broken units unable to engage. With two of the three factories captured, the Germans were stalled on their last MPh ADJACENT to the last objective with pinned and broken units due to a last lucky roll by the Russians.

Illuminating Rounds VASL tournament, round 2. A tight little scenario, came down to the close combat rolls for the last victory building. The germans had two attempts at 2-1 odds with a heroic modifier and failed.

Germans pushed hard in the centre with one StuG sent around the Russian left flank to interdict the retreat. Despite a heroic hero (what else?) manning the AT gun the Russians couldn't stop the Germans from taking each factory and defending the middle one from a last turn rush from the Russians.

One of the most fun scenarios I played recently. A great seesaw of good and bad as Dan and I played this one. Initially it felt like the Germans would steamroll the Russians. But by game end, the Germans had lost seven squads to 3 for the Russians and the Russians managed to hang on to all three victory locations. Great fun game in the ruins of Stalingrad.
