Hill 621Hard fought battle. It was touch and go for both sides. The Russians made a couple rash moves that cost them 2 leaders leaving them unable to rally all the broken units scattered across the battle field. Still, once they started climbing the hill, the Germans were hard pressed to keep them off the ridge. The Russians captured 5 hexes, but were pushed off one. In the end, they didn't have enough infantry to retake the final hill hex as the armor succumbed to PFs. Heloanjin
Round OnePlayed against defense taken from youtube "scenario archive" channel. They had the central area defended with wire and fortified locations. Germans lost 3 AFV's in the first movement phase, so held the rest of them back out of the danger lanes. They meticulously worked the infantry up on the left board and reached the bunker by turn 3. One Gun went down and created enough of a whole to slip a couple of tanks to run over the wire and a Mark 4 to drop a smoke round on a fortified hex. The flamethrower moved up and pinned the defender in the smoke. The German right flank petered out, but they completely broke through on the right and gained the buildings they needed for the victory. Guru Bob

One Tough CanuckEnded on turn German turn 7 when I ran out of men. A disastrous turn 3 killed the scenario as a contest, shame as it has a lot to recommend it. Managed to destroy or immobilise every German vehicle by scenario end, but got overwhelmed by the infantry. Gamer72
Tennis, Anyone? Danno
The OverlookA very close call, going down to the final CC on the final turn. Despite having superior morale the Brits seemed to break at every opportunity and eventually ran out of places to rout to. I managed to destroy one tank with a PIAT but the hero was then cooked by the second Bis. I probably set up a bit too forward. Overall though it was an enjoyable scenario and one that would present differently each time it was played. Nicho11
Go Big or Go HomeSo, after a lot of discussion on the last time Rhys and I played this. Mainly based around the fact that if I rolled dice they were 7 or less most of the time. Conversely when Rhys rolled his they were 7 or more (with one exception being a CH on a moving French tank by a Panzer in motion..... Lets just say lots of impossible, But he still did it :-) ). But that did not win him the crackers as the French infantry were basically unharmed by turn 4 and he chucked in the towel

So, we decided to do exactly the same thing again. Well actually this time with Rhys hopping that the dice were not exactly the same.
Good news for him they weren’t .
He managed to drive forward in a methodical way, but continued to lose infantry ½ squad at a time. The French on the other hand lost troops mainly to being captured for failure to rout.
The armour battle went the way of the Germans in the middle of the game, he nailed two of the three FCM’s in a DFPh phase when I tried to move the platoon to a better position on the other side of the stream. But the Panzers Killed one and then Immobilised the other. And of course my brave French tankers jumped out instantly. Right into tank MG fire that broke them too…… Run away !!!!
But the last French tank (sans it CMG which had malfed) held on and held off the Germans. The ATG got moved into a building eventually. It got a shot at the tank with the now known AL inside. 1. Hit RoF Bounce 2. Hit RoF Bounce 3. Hit RoF Bounce 4. Malf !!! Argh !
The Germans got some Infantry across to bridge. But the MMG Pinned or broke a few more. And in the end there just weren’t enough German troops to threaten the 3 remaining French MMC that were scattered across the buildings. One was so far back, only 1 of the tanks could get to it
The final nail in the coffin for the Germans was a CC with the MMG/8-0 combo. Which the French won. This stymied the trust of the German troops forward. The others were just too far back to get fire on all of the French who were by now sitting and cowering under concealment counters

To the Last Bullet Danno
To the Last BulletDan' Germans massed their firepower and kicked my butt all over the place. My dice were south of horrible. In one D Fire streak, I rolled 5 x 10's in a row, followed by an 11 which broke my MMG, an LMG and allowed Dan's Germans to cross the street like a stroll in Paris. My personal ELR went to scenario and I was checked out of the remainder of the game. My dice never got any better and Dan was rolling 3's and 4's like he was eating Skittles. So...yeah, I gave up after 5, because I was completely beaten and badly. Two losses as the Russians in this one is enough...never playing it again. grumblejones
Pössl’s PossePlayed at the annual Burning Wreck BBQ. I got the attacking Russians versus Dave's Germans.

Dave set up very light forward but in Los so I was able to make a very successful opening turn human wave. I also found Dave's pak gun in the woods in the middle of the board. That gun did a little damage, taking out three Russian afvs before I eliminated the crew. Aggressively, I started claiming buildings, quickly grabbing five by turn three and pushing the Germans out.

It got tight towards the end with Dave's reinforcements coming on from the east and cutting off any big advances. I eliminated the all but one German afv thereby making the needed buildings 10. By the end of turn 5 the Russians had 9 but that tenth was proving to be difficult.

In the m last turn, a needed Russians squad missed rallying on a 9, which was a huge blow. During movement I decided that one lone building to the east could be reached by an afv and a few infantry units but this building was occupied by a German full squad. I froze the location with a t34/85. Several shots to eliminate it failed. I then ran a 628, 8-1 and 9-1 leader cx adjacent. Facing an ambush roll of +3 I took an advancing fire 6 +2, rolled a pair of 2 for a 1mc and the squad failed. Facing routing away, the 10th location was mine and the game was halted.

Great scenario.

Pössl’s PossePlayed at So Cal's Burning Wreck BBQ against Bryan (?).

I set up for a human wave on the Russian right. Its possible that I didn't have a KEU to target, but I ran into the German line and chewed it up some to push the line back to the hill feature.

My armored thrust went up the Russian left. The German hidden AT gun malf-ed on a intensive fire shot. This gave the Russians an opening to put tanks and infantry up on the lip of the hill. Germans faced the Russians with their reinforcements. Russians tried to winkle the German 1st line infantry out of their houses on the Russian right.

We enjoyed a good back and forth with lots of box cars and a good bloody fight. Russians took the necessary building locations on the top of the 5th and held off a counter attack by the Germans. Would play again.

Battle for the Warta LineGermans attempted to attack in the north, supported by fire bases and flanking maneuvers in the forests. It just ran out of gas after one Pz1 malfed its MA and the other was destroyed by an ATR CR. Wire protected the entire Polish Southern flank, where two German squads spent several turns hung up on the wire. Guru Bob
Hell for the Holidays Danno
Hell for the HolidaysTough scenario for the Germans. My Germans would lose a MKIV, the 8-1 and 4 of the 5 half-tracks and have to concede at the end of Turn 5 with only 3 victory locations in German hands. grumblejones
SavnikGreat scenario and a really exciting game, won on the last DR of the last CCPh of the game! As the SS, my plan was to attack in the south, capture the buildings in the depression, then swing north to take the remaining buildings I needed. This generally worked, although helped by some very unlucky Partisan DRs early on, but the effect of ground snow made progress up and down the various levels very slow (stream in the depression is level -2!). Luck balanced out a bit later, with my OBA failing to secure any hits at all before the leader with the radio was shot dead by the Partisan sniper. I needed to win two CCs on the last turn to get 9 buildings; one was easy, the second was in my favour but could easily have gone wrong with HtH, fortunately it didn't. Andy_Bagley
Insurrection at CividaleThis looked an interesting scenario, and unusual in having Italians attacking German SS troops. It turned out to be a hard slog for the Italians however, especially with my MMGs and mortar getting multiple RoF and low DRs. I had my twoo MMGs on the second from of the level two building, also just put a couple of HSs in the front line and fell back with everyone else to defend the buildings. By turn 4 the Italians had taken heavy casualties and the Germans none at all, so my opponent conceded at this point. Andy_Bagley

The Puma ProwlsThe Russians adopted a defensive strategy, keeping their tanks in motion for three turns, but underestimated the maneuvering capacity of the Pumas. Once they get on a road, they're unstoppable. The Pumas surrounded the area around the stream, managing to wreck a Russian tank. The Russian Armor Leader approached from board 4 after a detour, and directed the burning wreck of two Pumas. In the end, all but one German vehicles were destroyed, sealing the Russian victory. mestravis

The Weigh InThe Poles set fire to the grain, and set-up wire to block all but the Y10 approach to the final buildings. Twin AT guns on the left flank killed multiple tanks as they moved primarily on that flank. The infantry held the center with the aid of the MG in the two story building. The game ended as the Artillery piece in the X10 woods took out two tanks with the help of Intensive fire, and a third German tank fell through the cellar while trying to overrun a berserk squad in a wooden house. Guru Bob
Seldom PracticalA really fun scenario that went down to the last turn. Lots of maneuvering for both sides which really is the funnest part of the game. Not surprised it's close on both Roar and the the Archives. SGT Mac
Riding the CoattailsI tried out a variant from an AAR on an ASL Blog. It was a total disaster for the Slavs as they charged the Polish line in the woods and were cut to pieces. The Poles actually counterattacked in their player turn to finish them off. Both Polish Mortars malfed in the first turn. Guru Bob
The Dead of WinterA rollercoaster of a game. German Mags and guns kept on jamming and being repaired in spite of extreme weather.
All the Russian infantry and leaders exited unharmed but the last T34 bogged while crossing the trench in the last hex and got destroyed by a lucky AP 37L shot from the AT gun that had just been repaired.

For the FatherlandA game that came down to the last CC is always a great game. The Russians managed a good withdrawal through the train station, but the German FT never ran out of fuel and was able to make some effective shots even on the last turn. dmareske
Get Them Out!A close game. The Germans had to watch their movement so as not to get eliminated instantly, although the French had something to say about it all. Some bad luck hurt the Germans with a few breaks, but the French tanks tbat acted as reinforced suffered an early loss thanks to snake eyes from the AT gun on the TK table!

Some back and forth in the turns saw the French suffer a decent VP deficit and I tried being aggressive as the Germans to balance things out. Some CC's broke out but they lost by 2 VP by the end of the scenario. I think the French should try to escape immediately, I stayed in the town to try for aome CVP but came up short.

Texas FloodThis is supposed to be a slaughter of the Americans and they try to hang on for dear life. And it was. Joe brought his forces in with a fury and overwhelmed several American positions with firepower. But my plucky Americans fought hard and around turn 7 it became pretty apparent that the Germans, for all their FP, couldn't win this one. When my opponent conceded, we had just completed Am turn 6 and another 16 CVP turn for the Americans. A rough calculation was 85 CVP for the Americans, 71 CVP for the Germans and the Americans had another 32 point south of the river. The Germans were in no position to get any points across the river, hadn't cleared all the building north of the river and the Americans were in the process of setting up strongholds in several buildings near the river that frankly the Germans simply didn't have enough turns to get to before game end. The Germans spent 3 turns playing hanky panky with that lone level 1 2 hex building in the middle of the map, having still not cleared it from all Americans. Pro tip, don't smoke out a building you need to shoot at to clear. tatumjonj
Panzerpioniere!Very close game against one of the best UK players. Mark came on strong on his left, holding his AFVs back until he had a better idea of where and what my troops were, and so was never in much danger of triggering the CVP cap, but fell just short of taking the necessary VP : had he taken the scenario balance, he would have won. This went to the last turn. I was lucky enough to get the full allotment of ? and so was able to get three stacks to obscure my mg and mtr placements. One ATG covered the length of the main road but would wait for a possible deliberate immobilization attempt. The other was in the northern brush just across the stream to get a rear shot as the H35s passed. Paul used platoon movement for the first turn, split off one tank in his second and thereafter all operated independently with only one if I recall correctly failing to move. When it became clear the attack was switching to the north edge I was able to easily relocate the ATG in W8 to X5 where it could cover the exit hexes. The other ATG had fallen in cc after a french hs advanced into its hidden location. In the end Paul got a tank and enough infantry off to seal the victory. (VASL Log)

"Ne Pas Subir"Very interesting and close game. As the Germans, I foolishly put some of my units at start where the French in level 2 buildings could see them, and several were broken by good DRs. However, the French advance had to pause while they waited for their tanks to catch up with the infantry, and the battle for the bridges was then a tough struggle. The lead French tank failed an ESB DR and was immobilised on the eastern bridge, but these tanks are monsters and nothing I could do would stop them. After a heavy firefight the French advanced their infantry across the western bridge on the last turn (plus one swimming!), and my attempts to break them failed, resulting in a French win. Andy_Bagley
Blick's BalkA tough fight for the Russians. Despite the Naval Infantry advantages over “normal” squads they were unable to force the win. 4 buildings captured but the central stone building with the HMG / 10-1 proved impervious to fire (even when i achieved encirclement) and a few rate tears soon broke up every Russian attempt to storm that building. The Finnish 5-4-8 squads are 1st Line and not Elite as printed on the scenario card Simonstan

Forest GummI played the American defenders in this one.

My opponent decided not to attempt to capture the outlying multi-hex building in earnest, despatching only a token force to tie down American troops there. Instead, he pushed with all tanks through the village. This thrust was extremely powerful and unstoppable. All I could do was try my best to somehow delay the juggernaut.

In this, I was successful in the end. Maybe my opponent could have pushed a bit harder in the beginning. That he was unfortunate to lose his 9-2 Leader early in the game surely had a significant impact in favor of my Americans as well.

During German Turn 5, my opponent conceded because by the end of the turn he would have reached the wall dividing the village at best. This would have left him only one more MPh to capture the two remaining multi-hex stone buildings which were still sufficiently garrisoned and also still had the support of all the four Sherman tanks.

Maczek Fire BrigadeI played against a defense from a VASL log file. Both Polish MG were placed on 1st level buildings. AFV were able to deal with them, though most AFV attacks vs infantry were ineffective. The infantry swept in and mopped up. Three Polish tanks were stunned in the end-game, and an armored car skirted around to destroy the 47 mm armed tank in the rear point blank. Guru Bob

Ranger StrongholdPlayed solo, both sides. I tested an aggressive German strategy to see how much their numerical superiority could manage. Exciting game with a lot of sniper action (including the elimination of the 10-3 American leader), several failures to rout, and unexpected CC results. Indeed! An aggressive setup was met with a massed stack of angry Germans that, initially, met with great success, knocking out a 9-2 + Hero stack in Z0, only for the survivors, crucially the 9-2 to self-rally and immediately break the Germans in turn. While both sides traded blows, the Brits quickly got the upper-hand and, from there, it was an uphill battle for the Germans. Having to get off the pier each turn was met with aggressive defenders occupying the adjacent hexes, where possible, and denying the Germans any movement without the possibility of massive losses.

The scenario can be very swingy, and while I'm happy I managed a Norwegian/British victory, it doesn't feel like a scenario I'd like to play more than once.

Firstly, just visiting and using the site is great - thanks for being here. You can contribute in many ways, from simply entering data like logging your plays, or your collection - through to rating scenarios or writing reviews. The site does cost me about $100/month to host, which I've been happy to do for a number of years now, and will continue to do so. Don't worry - we're not going away! However, if you'd like to support further donations are welcome (and all donations go towards the costs of running the site) or you could become a Patreon supporter for all sorts of funky benefits! (More details on the Patreon page.)

Patreons and regular donators are signified with a checkmark
on some panels across the site.
