Overview:
The German offensive to retake Kharkov put the Russian Voronezh Front in disarray. Shortages of fuel and ammo hampered the Russians. The siutation got worse on March 13th when the Grossdeutschland Division attacked north of Kharkov along the seam between the 40th and 69th Armies. Penetrating deep into the Russian lines, the armored elements, including a company of Tigers, turned northeast in the direction of Tomarovka. The Russian command committed the 3rd Guards Tank Corps to slow down the German advance.Attacker: Russian (3rd Guards Tank Corps)

2024-02-02 | (A) Justin DiSabatino | vs | Russian win | A second round at this one to try a different strategy with the Russians. Both sides started out in a similar fashion, though the Russians bunched up more in the center to force the Germans to pull their line in closer in case all of the Russian tanks rushed one side. By Turn 2, the score was tied as most of the Russians went west but two pushed east to force the Germans to keep tanks on the eastern flank or concede the two VP. On Turn 3, poor shots by the Germans combined with a Russian tank that set up as support (and took out two German tanks) meant that it became impossible for the Germans to win as six of the Russian tanks were set to exit. A fun scenario to focus on only AFVs, but ready to move on to combined arms.
2024-01-29 | (D) Justin DiSabatino | vs | German win | My first scenario with AFVs, so I will be playing this one again now that I have a better understanding of the rules. The Russians came on in two groups, one on each flank, to ensure the Germans had to cover a wide front to stop them breaking through for VP. The Germans set up in a wide line, with a Tiger on each flank to anchor the PZIVs. By Russian turn 2, the Germans managed to take out three Russian tanks but the Russians were positioned to make a run for the map edge and one of the Tigers malf'd its MA. It all fell apart on German Turn 2 when the MA was repaired and both Tigers kept rate while destroying a tank with every shot (4 total).

2023-10-31 | (D) Klara Kundzicz | vs | Cesar | German win (VASL Log) | I won, pretty flawleslly, my setup was optimal and i covered every angle, the russians could not move past me and i had no casaulties. Russians conceded.
2023-09-23 | (D) Klara Kundzicz | vs | Craig | Russian win (VASL Log) | My first encounter with AFV's, lost pretty badly but the whole game was cinematic and one of the most memorable i have ever played!
2023-05-13 | (A) Andreas R | vs | Jenny | German win
2022-11-23 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Bob W | Russian win | This was an introduction to AFVs for the German player. The Russian first turn nearly all the AFVs in motion, hoping to avoid an easy DFF shot on Turn 2. The German AFVs moved on board well, but realized the initial German plan offered a potential exit along the East flank. The Russians took early advantage of the opening. The Germans react as well as possible and are able to use their superior firepower to start wrecking the Russian AFVs. However, the Russians were able to move quickly towards the weak side and successfully exited the required AFVs for a victory.
2022-10-12 | (A) Owen Edwards | vs | Russian win | Similar to the previous play. Russians are able to get good terrain on their first turn, and the Germans found it hard to counterbalance both this and the numbers issue. Combine that with low German THs and it was more of a rout than the previous game.
2022-09-19 | (A) Owen Edwards | vs | Russian win | First time pushing around AFVs. Definitely got some rules wrong! Key moments, though, were the T1 events on the left hand side of the board, as a Tiger saw its MA malf (and X on repair attempt) and a IVF2 get blown up by a CH as it hid in one of the buildings in the south-west. Though the Germans did take out 5 Soviet tanks, they lost another two (both IVF2s; a Tiger and a IVF2 were left on the board at the end), with there just not being coverage or firepower to stop the other Russian tanks escaping - equivalent 8-5 to the Russians.
2022-08-05 | (A) Will Allred | vs | G. E. | Russian win | Given the lopsided ROAR we played with the Russian balance. I worry it’s too powerful. Entering with their full MP the Russians were able to reach very dominating terrain in the first turn for their support-by-fire elements and the maneuver element was able to dart deep down the map. With what seemed to be some fairly average DRs I killed one Tiger, immobilized the other, wrecked two PzIVs, and had 5 or so T-34s exited by the end of turn 3. I’ll be curious to see whether anyone else sees similar results when using the balance.
2022-06-25 | (D) Jim Liang | vs | Craig Renier | Russian win
2022-05-18 | (D) Jack Wilson | vs | Ken Walsh | German win | Ken and I switched sides and played again. Having learned a little from my failed effort with the Russians, Ken tried to move rapidly and avoid getting into a slugfest. Halfway through turn two it looked like he was going to pull it off: I had one PzIV wrecked, one immobile, and another under UK. Add to that his almost impossible shot that immobilized one of my Tigers., and the German tank force was almost kaput. On my side of the leger, I had knocked out only one T-34. However, in my half of turn two, I was able to knock out three more T-34s, followed by two more in his half of turn three. By that point, he had exited three T-34s, and knocked out two of my PZIVs, while I had knocked out six T-34s. That left him with one functioning T-34 still on the board that would have needed to kill at least one tank and survive to exit the board. Chances: slim to none. I wish I could say it was my superior tank maneuvers that was the key to victory, but actually my deadliest tank was the Tiger that got immobilized on turn two: it went onto singlehandedly destroy four tanks on its own. Behold the power of the Big Cat! Though the armor rules are certainly involved (read: complicated), they do an excellent job of giving a fairly accurate representation of WW2 armor combat. Fun scenario. Highly recommend any new player NOT to skip this one.
2022-05-11 | (A) Jack Wilson | vs | Ken Walsh | German win | Excellent armor training scenario. With an all-AFV OB it allows both players to focus exclusively on the armor rules. The Archive says this is an almost perfectly balanced scenario, but Ken and I found it to be tilted toward the Germans. Which, btw, is confirmed by ROAR. The Russians have a 10-6 edge in tanks, but the Germans have two Tigers. The Russians have the burden of attack, and they win by killing more tanks than they lose- with each tank exited being counted as a destroyed German tank. So, the Russian is faced with either hoping to win a stand-up tank duel (doable vs. the PzIVF2s, but ill-advised vs. the Tigers); or running the gauntlet of fire to exit more vehicles than the Germans can kill; or a combination of both. I attempted the third option: I tried exchanging some fire with the PzIVs, while avoiding the Tigers, then made a run for the exit when it looked like there was an opening. End result: by the end of turn three I had so many wrecked tanks that meeting the VC was pretty much impossible. More comments on the next play above.
2021-11-30 | (D) Dan Grabski | vs | Jean-Yves Tessier | German win | Finished in two turns thanks to a lot of good rolls on the German side. Scenario seems very "brittle" - there doesn't seem to be much chance for the Russians if the Germans get a few good rolls. Between the Germans getting to all try for APCR and the Russians not having smoke, it's really tough going for the Russians.

2021-07-06 | (A) Jim Liang | vs | Craig Renier | Russian win (VASL Log) | Played with balance given to Russians. I destroyed 3 Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. F2s and exited 4 T-34s. The Germans destroyed 5 T-34s, and the last T-34 was shocked and surrounded. Craig conceded at that point because even if he destroyed the last T-34, he could not surpass my totals count, i.e., 7 to 6. My first game with AFVs. Craig helped me with my play and reminded me of victory conditions.
2021-02-20 | (D) Javier Rodrigo Ballesteros | vs | Teseo | German win
2021-02-07 | (D) Jonathan Townsend | vs | Myself | German win | A close win, the Russians exited 2 and killed four (including a Tiger) but the Germans killed seven. A fierce furious fight. Helped me to digest the intricacies of Prep, Bounding, and Bouding FF - along with Motion or moving tatgets or firers.
2021-02-05 | (D) Igor Luckyanov | vs | Artyom Denisyuk | Russian win
2021-01-30 | (D) Jason Mr. | vs | Tony Fermendzin | Russian win | My first AFV battle, I hadn't even pushed counters around yet, just read the rules and watched a couple Tactical Tuesday battles. I want to thank Tony for his patience while I tried and failed to make tactical decisions and walked me through my DRM mistakes. The Russians had balance and were halfway across the map spread pretty evenly. My decision to meet the Russian T-34s head on in the open proved deadly as 3 out of 4 Panzers were destroyed in the West, then the decision to defend the East with Tigers on elevation, created point that the Russian tanks just drove around and swarmed in and past with no issues to end the game in 1 1/2 turns. I would like to say it was fun but my brain just exploded. I will learn from my mistakes and continue to learn. Thank you again for the Game Tony. Log file added to user files.
2021-01-25 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Steve Boro | Russian win (VASL Log) | Another in the Tactical Tuesday Game of the Month series, Another go at this scenario after my debacle a couple of weeks back. Rather than try to stand and fight against superior tanks, the initial plan was to run the Russian tanks as far and as fast as possible towards the southern border. For this particular scenario, the Russians received the balance. It turned into a close-in running gun battle. Movement was the key to the strategy, and the T-34's made NO Prep Fires in the game. 4 Russian tanks made it off the board, and 6 died on the field; a Tiger crew Shocked/UK and two Pz IVs wrecked as well. Thought that where the game would end, then my very able opponent rolls a 4 for shock removal in the German Turn 3...and the Tiger dies. A Russian "win" by the barest of margins and with incredible luck for the Soviets. This was born out by the DR stats: I had the best game I've ever played, 6.30 avg; my great opponent Steve B was deserted by Lady Luck with a 7.05 and an untimely MA Malf on a perfectly positioned Pz IV. Great game, Steve!
2021-01-17 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Craig Renier | German win | Man, do I suck as an armor leader. More of an experimental game to teach me the armor and TH/TK mechanics. The only bad experience is one you don't learn from...and today I learned I should have stuck with checkers. Thanks for your patience Craig!
2021-01-14 | (D) Mark Dennehy | vs | Craig Reiner | German win (VASL Log) | Playing with the Russian balance, the Russians used their extra MP in turn 1 to get most of their T34s half-way to the other edge in roughly 3 groups, one in the east, one in the center and the other on the west side. One T34 took an overwatch position on the hill in the center of the board. The Germans responded with bringing one Tiger onto the west-most hill on their side of board v and the other on the center hill to claim height advantage. Two PzKw IVs guarded the east-most pass with one taking position on the east-most hill while the other two moved in to add additional crossfire to the open spaces of board t as well as protect the rears of the Tigers. The only T34 on the hill fired on the center Tiger while several T34s in the center took shots at the west-most Tiger but being buttoned up against hull-down, moving Tigers at long range meant no hits. The Tigers, however, proved more accurate, one taking out the overwatch T34 with a critical hit and the other bagging one of the other T34s in the center, for 2 quick kills. The PzKw IVs took ACQ shots to prepare for the Russian rush in turn 2. The east-most T34s climbed up the hills, two the center hill and one the east-most hill to engage the center Tiger and the overwatch PzKwIV. The west-most T34s swung around the line of trees in front of the west hill, scaring the PzKwIV there into motion and unleashing a fog of smoke to protect itself. Instead of engaging these T34s, the Tiger waited for the center T34s in its LOS to start up, taking out one and watching the other make a run to the east-most hill area. Defensive Fire watched the Germans continue to rack up kills, as the T34 on the east-most hill got hit by the hilltop PzKwIV and the center Tiger took out one of the T34s on the center hill. With time to turn, the other Tiger turned its hull to face down the T34s that looped around the woods. The Russians got their volley of shots and while one came close to taking out one of the Tigers, none scored a kill. Unfortunately, many T34s were now vunerable to the next volley of shots in the German Turn 2 PFPh and the Tigers continued their precision firing with two more kills. The Russian now had to get several kills to have a chance and eyed the smoke-shrouded PzKwIV first, but just as it emerged from the smoke, one T34 malfed his MA and the other missed as the PzKwIV ran by, then tried an intensive fire shot which malfed that MA as well. The PzKwIV was going to just run and hide but seeing his sudden advantage, stopped and prepared to fire. The other PzKwIVs shifted to cover exits more effectively and join in on the kill of the malfed T34s, which one did in the AFPh. The Russian now ran off the board with the two surviving T34s in the Turn 3 MPh. The German gunners suddenly went cold and couldn't hit, but the damage was done and the Germans secured a victory.
2021-01-10 | (A) Tony Fermendzin | vs | Bob Saker | Russian win (VASL Log) | The Russian plan was to come in stop and try to win a firefight against the PzIV's (hopefully getting the first shot), and then to either swarm the Tigers or make a run for the exit. The Germans entered one Tiger and two PzIV's on each map board leading with the Tiger tanks with the PzIV's coming in behind providing support. The first turn saw the Russians shock one of the PzIV's and immobilize another on the west map board, while a third PzIV malfunctioned its MA. All at the cost of only one T34. Having the upper hand, the Russians then swarmed the remaining Tiger and PzIV on the east map board, taking both out on the second turn along with the immobilized PzIV on the west map board. However, this came at a steep price with the Russians losing five T34's in the process. The PzIV with the malfunctioned gun found its gun to be un-repairable and was recalled, leaving the Germans with only two tanks (one under an UK marker) against five Russian T34's. When the remaining PzIV under an UK marker failed to recover on the beginning of the Russian's third turn, the Germans were down to a single Tiger tank, needing to kill three of the fiver remaining T34. The T34's went in for the kill on the third turn taking out the Tiger with a BFF shot! A fun game all around. I was a bit surprised with how fast it all unfolded. In the end fortune favored the Russians in this one and they were able to win a game that was a lot closer then it might otherwise appear.
2020-10-13 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Loic Gourdon | German win | Loic is learning how to play tanks. As such, he got the red horde. He kept his tanks in motion, used pretty good swarming techniques and some bounding first fire; however, the dice gods were against him as witnessed by a tank going MALF, but he did take out two of my Pz IVF2. My Tigers, however, were devastating. One actually getting a rate tear and taking out two of his tanks in one phase. Great fun!
2020-10-01 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Dave Mareske | Russian win | Russian tanks were initially held off with German Mk IV covering the Tigers' flanks. One Tiger took out two Russian tanks by retaining ROF in DFPh. But the remainder of the Russian swarm on the Tiger rolled a 2 on the TK. The 2nd Tiger was immobilized and eventually killed. Further low die rolls on the TK for the Russian left the German force unable to block a Russian exit.
2020-09-12 | (A) Macari Samuel | vs | Seb Prof | Russian win | Very uninteresting scenario except for players who love only afv.
2020-06-06 | (D) Derek Dunn | vs | Bruce Carson | Russian win
2020-05-18 | (D) Kevin Sanders | vs | Eric Topp | Russian win | Learning scenario sees my Germans too aggressive with PZ-IVs loosing 2 right away. Mis judged a ridge line = 1 more dead PZ4. Tiger kills 2 T-34s. Russians rush to get off map. Ditch effort needs the South Tiger to move off hill and engage Russian conga line ...start up, rolls a 12 immobilized for game over....
2020-04-03 | (A) Tom Kearney | vs | David Gregg | Russian win | New player development.
2020-03-08 | (D) John Smith | vs | Scott | German win | Scenario seem hyper-sensitive to tactics use. There's run, there's gun, then there's run and gun. My opponent chose run and made a dash for the opposite board edge. My Tigers and Pz IVs made quick work of it, despite having one malf MA, and one Pz IV recalled because I rolled boxcars on an Intensive Fire shot. Game ended after 2.5 turns. I think the only way the Russians can win this one is to exercise a run and gun strategy, using a force to swarm and delay some German panzers (and maybe take some out) while the other T34s make a run for the board edge.

2019-11-09 | (D) Vilis Pavulans | vs | Matias Dahlbäck | Russian win | Balanced to the russians they simply overran me as the german. I didn´t have time to get to the quick bastards and when the russians also maneuvered well and managed to knock out my panzer IVs I was without a chance.
2019-11-09 | (A) Matias Dahlbäck | vs | Vilis Pavulans | Russian win | Good training scenario for AFV rules.
2019-11-04 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Nick Faryna | German win | Bloody Tigers. LOL.
2019-09-20 | (D) Tom Rodwell | vs | Vilis Pavulans | German win
2019-09-20 | (D) Tom Rodwell | vs | Vilis Pavulans | German win | Vilis taking the T-34s of 3rd Gds Tk Corps advanced forward in two groups of five leaving his tanks in motion. GD's panzers adopted stationary defensive positions, four on board v and two PIVs on board t. The Russians continued their charge forward, losing only two tanks through a combination of poor shooting & failed penetrations. In desperation the panzers unwisely resorted to intensive fire, malf'ing three main guns, including one of the mission critical Tigers. At this point by the end of the Russian turn 2 things were looking distinctly grim for the Germans, not least as the two PIVs on board t were knocked out by close range bounding fire. However, in the German’s turn 2, through a combination of manoeuvre and better (or lucky depending on your perspective) shooting, the Germans recovered the position to a degree knocking out a T-34 on each board. Vilis’s remaining T-34’s destroyed one more PIV as they made a dash for the exit in the third turn with three tanks making good their escape. However, in an incredibly tense finale good German shooting managed to destroy a further three T-34s leaving the score at 7-6 to the Germans for a very narrow win.

2017-05-15 | (A) Greg Krane | vs | Solo | Russian win | Russians overwhelmed the Germans on the German right. Surrounded and took out a Tiger, then exited the necessary VP's.
2017-02-09 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Bronson Barnhart | German win | Tigers dominated the battlefield. All Russian AFVs were eliminated by the end of Turn 3. Germans had fantastically good luck in their shooting.
2017-01-28 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Bronson Barnhart | Russian win | A very good learning scenario for AFVs. Russians have numerical superiority, but Germans have the firepower and positioning advantage. Much will depend on the Tigers. Russians equally divided their entering force between the east and west, and the Germans countered likewise. Intensive firing every gun, German luck prevailed early, making the count 1:3 in their favor. During their next movement phase, Russians were able to get behind one of the Tigers and knock it out, leaving just a sole German tank guarding the east. This was the turning point of the battle. Next prep fire was ineffective for the Germans, and the Russians knocked out the remaining eastern German AFV. This allowed them to sneak off four AFVs that turn, securing a victory. A good game to flip sides and play again from another perspective.

2016-02-28 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Connor Mullins | German win | Fast playing scenario. I ran my Russian armor straight ahead and tried to bust through the German line of tanks. 4 of my T-34's made it...the rest met fiery ends for a German win.

2014-11-23 | (A) Michael Focht | vs | David Garber | Russian win | The German player conceded after his second turn with 1 GO PzIV remaining, 2 PzIVs eliminated, 1 PzIV recalled and off the board, 1 PzVI eliminated, and 1 PzVI immobilized and MA MALF'ed. At this point only 1 Russian T-34 had been eliminated, and 7 were in position to exit the South edge of the board on the next turn.
2014-11-16 | (D) Michael Focht | vs | David Garber | German win | This one came down to the last Russian turn, ending tied at 7-7. The Russian player was unable to kill another German tank before exiting the last two T-34s. Seven Russian tanks were destroyed, and three exited the South edge. Four German tanks were destroyed. The seventh Russian tank was destroyed on the half-hex row of the South board edge, just one MP away from a Russian victory!
2014-11-09 | (D) Michael Focht | vs | David Garber | Russian win | I lost a Tiger to a CH on turn 1. By turn 4 I was down to 1 Tiger and one UK Pz IV. The Russians had lost 4 T-34s, exited 2, and had 1 Recalled. It was no longer possible to keep any more from exiting, so I conceded.

2013-04-30 | (D) O Ramaille | vs | German win | The russians decided to fight. But the superior power of the german guns was unmatched. 8 T-34s ended up as wrecks. One managed to escape and the last one was left in very difficult position, flankes as it is by the 2 remaining Tigers. Final german score = 8 T-34s wrecks Final russian score = 4 PzIVF2 + 1 T-34 escape.
2013-04-29 | (A) O Ramaille | vs | Russian win | The Russians formed 2 groups of 5 T-34 and dashed towards the south when several Panzers and a Tiger appeared on the hill just ahead. Their firepower knocked out five russian tanks. But the remaining T-34s turned the germans and rushed to the south destroying 2 panzer IVF2 and surviving several hits from the pursuing panzers. The russian won with 5 exited tanks and 2 eliminated panzers.
