Northeast of Geilenkirhcen, the 43rd Infantry Division was advancing on a route parallel with that of the American 84th Infantry Division. The evening of the 18th found D Company, 5th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry consolidating their position after seizing a toehold on the village of Bruggerhof. Major Londsdale set about getting the company dug in to meet the inevitable German counterattack. At 1500, the 104th Panzergrenadier Regiment, supported by three assault guns, struck the Cornwalls.

Second playing of this scenario, didn't do so well this time. My opponent very astutely concentrated his forces on the two flanks where the larger VC buildings are, with just a small spoiler attack in the centre. I might have done better had my AT Gun managed to hit the StuG that ran past him; this and some other poor shooting meant I quickly lost six building hexes. I might have managed a counterattack but sent my remaining forces in the wrong direction - East instead of West, where they might just have had some success. Still an enjoyable game though.

Andy sums up the game well in his report - but he was unlucky with his AT gun, and I was lucky to take out his Carrier on the second shot (Intensive firing) of the game. It was close but a very enjoyable scenario that I recommended to others over the weekend.

The most difficult thing about this scenario is understanding the victory conditions! These rely on control of building hexes (not buildings) by the British, who are defending. And vehicular crews can't control these hexes, although gun crews can. Got that?
Well, the German attack started well, sweeping through the Eastern half of the mapboard, then turning north to take the two buildings in the woods on board 42. The first of these, in I10, duly fell and the Germans moved on to the second in U8, which fell on the last turn. Meantime however, the Brits had re-occupied the building in Y10, where there was a stationary German StuGIII in bypass. So the Brits controlled the building but neither side controlled the HEX! (A bypassing vehicle can't control a location but the Brits can't meet the requirements of A26.11 if there is an armed enemy unit there.) This would probably have been fatal for me if my opponent had not made the mistake of abandoning the vehicle, attempting to get the crew into CC. They promptly got shot dead by the Brits in the building, leaving the vehicle unarmed and me in control of the hex. So a win on a "technicality", and one I almost certainly didn't deserve!

Joe put his Flak wagon and HMG on board 42, and came on strong on board 22 with all three StuGs and most of his infantry. He brushed aside my right flank defence of a squad and a half with contemptuous ease, but got hung up chasing the brokies. I unloaded the Piat from the Carrier, so had two Piats and a hidden 6-pounder on that flank. One Piat took out a StuG, and another StuG went down to an APDS shot off the Gun. Meanwhile, I managed to stun his Flak wagon and eliminate it in CC. A real dogfight for the central building ended badly for him, and without much left, Joe conceded. Fun little scenario.

A short fun scenario playable in a couple of hours. The British sniper was active recalling the Flakpanzer immediately and nailing the 9-2 leader a couple of turns later. Germans struggle to pass MCs as they closed on the buildings so the Brits hold for the win. Note the specific VC requirements if you play this one

Decent combined arms scenario - good options. We played VC as stated "control" which had to be gained by MMC. My opponent failed his PMC after malf'ing a Stug and broke 2 of his squads which I surrounded. Too small to come back from this early bad luck.

A short nice scenario. It is important to understand the Victory Conditions correctly. What makes this game interesting is that the playing area is basically divided by some central patch of woods. As the German attacker you have to think about carefully which half you will attack with how many units - the same puzzle applies for the British on where to defend with what. Contemplation regarding this is not made easier by both sides only having two leaders and not many squads. Whatever the case, the German will need stone building hexes on both sides of the woods to bring home the win. Since the scenario is short, it might well happen, that units committed to one part of the playing area will not be able to shift to the other one in time to be brought to bear.
I was attacking where the British had only few units (the rural part). My plan was to overwhelm that part and afterwards shift the units that took the farm up there down towards the village to block any counterattack and to secure the building hexes conquered in the middle by my other units. As it happened, the enemy Sniper first broke one of my few valuable squads near the farm (which had no leader support). I managed to SMOKE the farm, bring up the Flakpanzer up close and personal only to be stunned by a HS in spite of Armor Leader AND which afterwards broke my second valuable squad with final fire... So much for my plan to redeploy to the village. I had to move troops to the farm instead as I HAD to have it for any chance for victory. Consequently, my units in the village were short of infantry and had only 1 StuG after I lost the other parked in Bypass against better knowledge. After the enemy Sniper broke ANOTHER HS near the farm, things looked quite grim there.
In the village, my 9-2 with HMG dealt some serious damage, but I had not enough boots on the ground there to make progress. At long last, the farm fell. But - horrors - my 9-2 suffered lethal fate and the 548+HMG broke at the edge of the village. I thought I lost it then because there seemed no chance to cross the street. I had one single pesky HS down at the bottom though - a threat in being. I started to move it into action in turn 4. It managed to step into the open ADJACENT to the hidden ATG, miraculously survived the 8-4TH and follwing effects roll unscathed only to be killed by a ROF shot just short of the door to the last missing stone building hex. Combined with some heroic and lethal movement at the edge of the woods across open street enough fire was triggered to allow one of my units to sneak through for the win.
