By the middle of January, “Easy” was on the attack again. Although many replacements had come into the ranks, some of whom were not even paratroop-qualified, Major Dick Winters entrusted them with one more assault to retake ground east of Bastogne lost a month earlier. The “Screamin’ Eagles” griped and moaned in the freezing Belgian countryside, but Easy Company’s vets followed Winters’ orders – and the replacements followed the vets. Upon entering the smoking ruins of Noville, there was an immediate counterattack by Panzer-Division 9. Winters led the remains of the 2nd Battalion to secure the town, which was infested with German snipers. The resulting losses left him with only 20 or so men who had dropped along with him on D-Day.
Attacker: German (Panzer-Division 9)
Defender: American (Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division)
First time playing DASL on VASL; both of us found the tiny units on huge hexes quite disconcerting, but we managed anyway.
The Americans concentrated their defenders in a few large stacks rather than spreading HSs across the board, so I had to approach cautiously, and kept my tanks out of PSK range. I concentrated my attack in the south, and managed to run an couple of squads round the Americans to reach building bC4 on my second turn. The American reinforcements counterattacked and retook this building, but by then my other infantry was moving up towards the exit area of board c. So my plan worked, but whether it would have worked without the dice on my side is less clear - I got some good DRs when it mattered, particularly a snakeyes that killed his 10-2 leader moving to cut off my advance.
By the end of turn 4 the Americans had suffered heavy losses whilst the Germans were virtually intact. It seemed clear that getting the necessary VPs off the board would be quite easy, so my opponent conceded at this point. Good scenario though.

Round 2 of Alpenfestung XIV.
A game that came down to one half squad from 4, none of whom could pass a MC to exit the map. The first turn sniper that broke my BAZ hs left a tank-sized gap to give 6 exit points (of 14) right at the start. A second tank dodged the next BAZ trap to run off, along with one HS leaving only one point for the Germans to secure the win. John missed a couple of sneakier hexes to attempt to run from and that was enough to give my lucky Americans the win.

The Germans refused their right flank and made a strong push in the center, with a supporting effort on their left. The US reserves reinforced the center and their right and stopped the Germans cold.

Some mistakes on both sides, but a very enjoyable game for both my return to armor, and my first game of Deluxe ASL. Andy set up with a pretty solid forward defense. I pushed with two tanks on the left and one on my right, using them as battering rams to try and ease up my infantry advances. I lost one to an early bazooka shot, but things were still going reasonably well. My troops broke up a lot of Andy's early defenders, and by turn 3 I had the central building taken to up my SAN, and had encircled an American squad and leader on my right. I made a couple mistakes here. First, I got too aggressive with my right flank tank, putting it very far forward on the bridge in an attempt to hold back Andy's reinforcements. It ended up getting popped when he swarmed it with bazookas. I also piled into melee on the encircled squad, and Andy immediately declared HtH. I had some bad rolls, and he ended up wiping out 3 squads and a leader of mine. At this point, my sniper went on a tear on my left. This left me a huge opening on the left edge, which I immediately took advantage of by rushing all my troops and their prisoners towards it from the center. Andy redeployed, and the last few turns were a back and forth of German troops inching forward on the far left, with Andy's 10-2 and other remaining squads firing at them as they moved. On the last turn, Andy assaulted my tank and destroyed it, but I had enough troops to block his firing and nose over the victory conditions with the remainder. Great fun!

Won as the Germans exiting exactly enough points, leaving 2 burning tanks on the map. Went to exit on the left, checked the VCs and had to take a sharp turn to the right to exit on board c, which worked out well.. I pulled the top US leader into a useless position where I pinned his squad.

OK. This one plays more reasonable when you take your time and use all of your resources (DUH !!!!). The attack strategy was to go for the central building with the bulk of the forces, but threaten the southern building to prevent wholesale shifting of the defense. I protected the AFV's a lot better this time to keep the exit victory potential always in play till the end. If the middle building falls, then the infantry can fan out and screen the vehicles for exit.
Two notable events. I smoked a concealed 9-1, HS/BAZ team 2 hexes away. Then ran a bunch of people adjacent. Move in for the CC and no ambush. Then I roll boxes so he can withdraw and kill the tank in his prep fire phase. The other was I moved a tank adjacent to a concealed squad with a DC. Are pondered throwing it but decided not to when we looked up all the mods. In the advancing fire phase the tank rolls a critical hit, eliminating the problem entirely.

This is one of those games where being a bit too aggressive actually can hurt you badly. Misplayed all 3 tanks against a solid defense. Concession on turn 4 as there was no way a building was going to be taken and there were not enough points for a dash off board.
Would like to try this again as the attacker as I think I would do a lot better a 2nd time
