The First and Fourth Rangers, under the command of Bill Darby, landed at Maiori, west of Salerno on 9 September 1943. They then moved 10km inland to block the road to Naples. Once established in the hills, they became the major obstacle to German moves to retake Salerno from the west. Knowing that the Rangers lacked armor and heavy weapons, the XIV Panzer Corps was ordered to dislodge them.... Epilogue: German reports at the time spoke highly of the combat prowess of the Ranger Division, unaware that there were never more than three Ranger battalions involved!

Played solo, both sides. I tested an aggressive German strategy to see how much their numerical superiority could manage. Exciting game with a lot of sniper action (including the elimination of the 10-3 American leader), several failures to rout, and unexpected CC results. All four American BAZs failed on their first shot (damn!). Complicated board for a beginner like me, with dozens and dozens of LOS checks. The Americans ended with one HS and one SMC in Good Order on the victory area.

US Rangers attempt to take on Panthers with bazooka at close range and get DMd early. US tries to fall back to the hill. Right flank collapses, left flank holds but is stranded. Rangers try to pull back but Germans CX ING over the hill overwhelm them Quick German victory by turn 3-4. US should have used more cover and fell back sooner and try to delay rather than engage early.

Came down to the last defensive fire phase. The Germans rolled 4 10's, 3 11's for Defensive fire attacks ranging form 12@+0, to 6-2, and a couple 4-2's and failed to stop the American's maintaining a foothold in the victory area.

A bit spread out defence and a two pronged assault gave a good advancing speed at the beginning. The germans managed to remove two BAZ pretty fast at the cost of a few german halfsquads. The northern force was soon slowed down due to brokies but the southern force continued to advance in the center and south. A BAZ got a AFV trying to get up the center hill and the 10-3 american leader started to dole out some severe punishment with a squad and a MMG but thanks to breaking all BAZ-units the last german AFV could advance to point blank and then the german force could completely surround the american force in the woods on the hill and manage encirclement and the battle was over.

The Americans set up primarily on the hill in concealment terrain. The Germans advanced on both American flanks. The American defense relied on the MMGs keeping ROF, one with the 10-3 leader, which did not happen enough. The Germans were able to maneuver behind the American defense, encircling, breaking and eliminating the American defenders one by one. The game was over before the end of Turn 4.

Dan's Germans came in hard and fast to my Americans that set up on reverse slopes further back. Bazookas took out both Tanks and the MMG's helped hold back the Germans up until Turn 4. Turn 4, the Germans started to inflict losses and pushed the Americans into the woods on the south part of the hill. The Germans pressed the attack, but were ultimately thrown back by the heavy US firepower. My Americans would hold out for the win.

US 10-3 leader got takem out on T5 by a K result and it was all over for the US troopd, although it could have turned nasty when the US sniper broke the guards of US prisoners, one of whom overpowered the guards in CC and rearmed themselves. Unfortunatelt for them they were broken in the next fire phase....
German attack was not concentrated enough and I could slowly retreat the rangers to the top of the hill. The panzers moved too close and I destroyed them with bazookas. Then it was three turns of maintaining the line. I ended with all the initial American units in Good Order.
