Since the 19th of November the tide in Stalingrad had begun its fateful turn. For on that day to the north and south of the city, the Soviet Army launched a massive two-pronged counterattack, on a 200-kilometer front, with 10 infantry divisions, three tank corps and two cavalry corps aimed at relieving the beleaguered city. Gradually over the next days and weeks the Russians within the city turned into the primary attackers, and the Germans morphed into its principal diehard defenders. Within the perimeter of Regiment 578 four buildings in particular helped hold the Russian assaults at bay. From his command post Major Rettenmaier, who had once been tasked with driving the enemy before him into the Volga, now did his best to be kept from being swept from within sight of its banks altogether.
Attacker: Russian (344th and 650th Rifle Regiments, 138th Rifle Division)
Defender: German (Infanterie-Regiment 578, Infanterie-Division 305 with Panzer-Pionier Bataillon 50)
A very interesting scenario with smart VC. The issue of the game was decided in the last CC of the last turn. It was very closed in the end. In addition, a lot of events spiced the game. Overall, we really enjoyed this scenario !

Russians were lucky to attack the 3VP Building on the flank and then continue to hold and press slowly forward for two more VC, one of which was 2VC and zero for the last. It all came down to last German counter attack on last turn to re-take the high VC to no avail!

This was an excellent scenario. Thought all was lost when the 2VP building was surrounded. I managed to move a mmg with a conscript into the cellar and the squad held off the onslaught. Last die roll was a 1mc and rolled a 5. Forgot about the German reserve entering until turn 4 as well.

Attack started well behind cover of smoke with a rush into the sewer. Unfortunately by turn 4 half the sewer rats had been lost at least twice and the above ground attack was nailed by three separate KIA rolls on three separate squads. Highlight was rubbling the only remaining stairwell hex of the 2 VP building preventing its capture. Defense was well placed and skulked to avoid my gun. Max VP in the southeasterly building which required crossing open ground.

After setting up as the Germans I felt I had no chance to win. This was made even worse when my opponent realized he had a 1st level position in FF12 to deny me what I thought would be some pre-game concealment. It wouldn't be so bad if the Germans weren't forced to protect the 2-point Z17 in the middle of no man's land. I assigned 5 VP to V15 and X15 as I figured these would be the least-expected and hardest to hold onto for the Russians. The southern terrain around this area also offered the best protection for my troops. Unfortunately my opponent placed his gun in Y14, which had great LOS to blast any of my troops tried to retake these positions. That gun is a beast, and I had no good answers for it other than hoping to get a lucky sniper roll. Thankfully for me my lone HS in GG21 held out until the end, and my men in CC19 lasted longer than I thought. Eventually the Russians just got too weak and I was luckily able to retake X15, V15, and even Z17 on Turn 5. As with many RF scenarios, the Attacker has ample time to just sit and shoot to soften up the defense. With limited pregame concealment this shouldn't be a problem. I would take the Russians every time in this one, though I am in no hurry to play it again as it was quite boring.
