In order to slow the lightning advance of the Japanese, Lt.-General Stilwell sent the elite Chinese 200th Division into the walled city of Toungoo to help stabilize his ruptured front. Meanwhile to the south, Japanese patrols ranged through the deserted streets of Rangoon. After a bitter two-day battle to force a river crossing on 20 March, the Japanese 55th Infantry Division invested the city from the south, west and north. On the 24th, the Japanese began a series of attacks on the city proper. Their only success on the first day lay in the northwest corner of the ancient city, where the 112th Infantry managed to penetrate the native quarter.

An unrelenting wave of Japanese units swept to an easy win by T6. Unless you can KIA the Japanese they come back quickly with the 7 available leaders. Also they have way more smoke potential than they need, as well as 4x AE squads, a FT and the potential for 3x DC Heroes. My opponent played a good game leading with plenty of 2nd Line HS and whilst they aren’t Stealthy they will still kill off a full strength Chinese 4-4-7 in HtH CC with a DR of 5 and causing CR on a DR of 6. An uneven fight, I certainly wasn’t helped in this playing by too many early breakdowns of those Chinese B11 SWs

Set my Chinese up in a layered defense, with a strong final position protected by both pillboxes. Japanese attacked across a wide front. Dan used dash to get across the first street without using a banzai. It worked well. Main issue for Dan throughout was his challenge in passing MCs. Over six turns, this added up and cost him the game. Dan used his light mortars well to place WP and Smoke. My 9-1 and squad in a forward build (which was fortified) could not be pinned or reduced and slowed his advance for three turns - until he finally blasted into the building with a DC breach. One group of his troops ran into my HIP 10-2, 4-4-7, and HMG. These Chinese were able to hold up and attrit the Japanese on that side of the board through the entire game. One the other side, Dan was able to push his way through my forward defenses - excepting one place where he was unable to completely kill me in CC. He pushed me back to the edge of Board d on that side pretty quickly, but continued to be reduced by 12FP, 8FP, and 4FP shots. I was rolling well and Dan rolled two 12s on leader MCs (killing both leaders on the wound severity check). In the end, Dan ran out of Japanese squads to drive his assault home. He made a good attack, just was not able to keep enough intact for the final assault. Inevitably, the final assault will be against a well-defended position on the back board edge (of Board d), so the Japanese will need some un-reduced squads to succeed. This scenario is really fun and feels well-balanced!!
