German (SS)American
Overview:
On the second day of Operation Wacht Am Rheine, Kampgruppe Peiper had cleared Honsfield of American troops. After this, being low on fuel, Peiper decided to attempt to refuel at the American pumping facility at Bullingen, which fell after a small skirmish south of the town. Peiper had his vehicles’ fuel tanks filled with some of the 50,000 gallons of fuel they seized. After this, he sent small reconnaissance probes to the north. One of the reconnaissance probes was led by Werner Sternebeck, and was comprised of four Mark IV tanks accompanied by SS-Panzergrenadiers. They dueled with Tank Destroyers of the 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion and their supporting infantry of the 2nd Infantry Division not too far north of Bullingen.Attacker: German (SS) (Lead elements of Kampfgruppe Peiper, SS-Panzer Division 1. 2023-08-06 | (A) Ron Garcia | vs | Darryl M. | American win | I think this one went as the others have described. I ran my SS troops full tilt but came up two buildings short. My friend pulled his forces back and made moving forward a challenge. There was some strategy involved in that I pinned a bunch of his squads in the big woods overlay, enabling me to run the bulk of my forces around the other side and flank the last two buildings. However, there is just too much open ground to cover to get to the last three buildings. Heck, I only took the first of the three because I ran a HS through a gauntlet of open ground shots and somehow survived. I think the SS needs to be really lucky or the Americans really unlucky to for the Germans to pull this one off.
2023-05-01 | (A) Simon Staniforth | vs | DB | American win | A fair bit of ground for the Germans to cover in just 6 turns. I pushed quite hard losing mainly armoured Units regularly along the way, particularly once the HIP M10 popped up. Highlight of the game was subsequently taking it out with a CH from a captured BAZ. By the final turn I was able to mount an assault on the final two rear most buildings and even get into CC having risked my two remaining AFVs to freeze but without enough strength to carry the day. Closer than I thought it would be after the initial couple of turns
2023-04-21 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Dennis Dowd | American win | The SS had a good push but lost three tanks to BAZs (one immobilized in a bad spot). So, the SS had to cover some open ground in the last turn to capture the last buildings. To make matters worst and US 1/2 squad routed forward, rallied and took back one of the forward buildings with no SS left to run back and take it. A wounded SS leader and 1/2 squad failed to rally three times to prevent that. Great game, would like to try the attack.

2023-04-08 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Jim Waterhouse | American win | Tight game that came down to the last roll of the last phase of the last turn. The Germans struck the American right flank with a tiny force on the left. Making a cautious advance, the Germans swept likely bazooka sites with the infantry prior to advancing the armor. American defensive fire was ineffective with the Germans passing the few MCs. The SS troops pressed the attack using armor smoke to cover their approach. Stumbling into a bore sighted hexes cost the Germans a few half squads, but the attack progressed. But the initial advance was too slow. The Germans were forced to take more chances, advancing into a number of CC attacks. The American Tank Destroyers were completely ineffective, getting few hits and only immobilized one Panzer, while the Panzer destroyed both Tank Destroyers. On the final turn, the Germans needed to gain control of 3 more buildings, each occupied by a squad, one broken. In PFPh, one of the MMCs was broken. The Germans were able to place smoke to cover the final advance. 3 German squads and a 9-1 leader maneuvered adjacent. The Americans gained ambush and rolled enough to CR one German squad. The Germans attacked back at 3-2, but were only able to CR the American squad, leaving the final building in American control.

2023-03-04 | (D) Andy Bagley | vs | David Blackwood | A | American win | Second playing of this scenario, which I rate as pro-American but still good fun. My approach as the defender was to pull back as many troops as I could from the front line to defend that last two-hex building at the back. The M10's were also positioned well back, and this generally worked OK, taking out a couple of PzkwIV's before the first of them was knocked out. Even so, the Germans got close, and made a predictable all-out charge for the last building on the final turn, but were just stopped short. |

2023-03-04 | (A) Richard Webb | vs | Simon Staniforth | American win | Not my finest game. Simon positioned his tanks exceptionally well, and soon I had burning tanks littering the field. There's a long way to go, and whilst the final buildings look hard to hold if attacked, I couldn't get close enough to them. Had to take some risky moves to try and 'schrek his TD, but despite good smoke and vsg, was to little to late and failed my personal MC and conceded.
2023-03-04 | (D) Simon Staniforth | vs | Richard Webb | American win | Feels a lot to do for the German player, I had manned the rear most 3 buildings with 4 squads, 9-1, both MMGs along with both M10s and the mortar nearby. The PzIVs got picked off so the CVP rose quite quickly and my opponent called it T4. Both M10s were still in the game and looking likely to take out a couple of HTs which would have seen the CVP cap breached. 4 broken squads also that turn as he took risks to move up didn’t help.
2023-03-04 | (A) Ian Morris | vs | Paul Legg | American win | 8 morale troops can’t rally or pass a morale check 9 times out of 10. Close game, almost had it in the last turn.
2023-03-03 | (D) Jim Bishop | vs | Hans Bugge | American win | This was played as part of ASO. I bid A1, Hans bide A0. I exchanged 2 X 6-6-7 for 2 X 6-6-6. This was a very tight game. Americans abandoned the front from the beginning, creating two strong points on the flanks of the map. On turn 1, one MkIV is recalled to a hot Sniper and 1 is immobilized by a mini ROF run from the 60mm mortar. This proved to protect the Germans from the CVP cap but was costly in the end as the AFV battle was evened out. On turn 2, the Germans step into an American trap with 2 X hts and a MkIV only to have the M10 roll a 12 on the TH DR. The Gun repairs later in the game and remains a concern which draws off German assets. In the last two German turns, the pressure was on, forcing the Germans to take risks which were promptly punished. All three hts were killed, along with one of the MkIV's. Though the German Infantry tried to get close, it just couldn't weather a hail of fire coming from 3 MMGs and nearly all of the American Infantry in and around the last two VC buildings. Tight game, but in the end, a fairly comfortable American victory.

2023-02-17 | (A) Jim Bishop | vs | Joe Arthur | American win (VASL Log) | I keep trying to win this as the Germans and I keep getting damn close, but to no effect. In my game with Joe, I couldn't pass many morale checks while his Americans were often unphased by anything I did. I made good progress through 3 turns but no matter what you do, you always feel behind on time. Joe placed his M10s in a good position and had endless ROF. They knocked out all of MkIV's and a ht with a loaded squad by games end. I still managed to weather a hail of fire in the end game to get into CC in the last two buildings. I won one (1:1 -1) and survived the attack back to take that building, In the other, I was in a 1:2 flat and failed to roll the necessary 3. Missed it by this --><-- much! The loss is entirely on me. My AFV play was uninspired. I malf'd a MA in my AL AFV trying for an Intensive Fire SMOKE shot. I parked two more in front of his HIP M10 and they were soon dispatched. I lost one to a good play on my part followed by better dice on Joe's part. Sadly, the post game stats weren't rendering well or I would have more to say about them here. While overall, they look balanced, Joe's dice were certainly more timely than mine. Still, my bad AFV play probably cost me more than Joe's good dice.
2023-01-30 | (A) Ian Morris | vs | Martin M | American win | Clever defence by Martin. I was still in with a shout until the crits started rolling in, conceded after three tanks went down.
2023-01-02 | (A) Michael Rodgers | vs | Magnus Rimvall | German (SS) win | Broad front attack because of 5 HIP HS. Tough haul until penultimate turn when a lot of American units broke, allowing Germans to succeed on final turn.
2022-11-09 | (D) Paolo Cariolato | vs | Federico Corso | American win
2022-11-04 | (A) nathan wegener | vs | Paul Works | American win | Great fall back defense - could not get behind anyone and ran out of units.
2022-07-15 | (A) Andy Bagley | vs | Mike Grogan | German (SS) win | A great scenario, and I reckon well-balanced provided the SS player keeps his attack moving. The American force looks strong but the setup rules almost force them to spread out rather than concentrate their defence. The luck swung to and fro in our game. Some good early DRs allowed me to sweep aside the American picket line of HSs with little trouble and no losses. I planned to concentrate my attack on the west side, sending infantry ahead of the tanks where possible and holding back the hts to exploit any gaps that appeared. This went well at first but then ran into a HIP M10 TD, which knocked out a PzkwIV and a ht with a full squad. A further snakeyes then killed a leader and accompanying squad, an important smoke shot failed, and I was starting to worry about running out of time or troops (or both). Still, I persisted and managed to assemble enough force to charge the last two American-held buildings in Z2 and Z3 on my final turn. This could have gone either way, but fortunately I got the DRs that mattered and was able to take the final buildings for the win. A very close and very enjoyable game. Afterthought: Since the SS movement on Turn 1 is limited, should the picket line of HSs with their bazookas simply drop HIP and run back on their first turn, so that the Americans can assemble a stronger defence further back?
2022-06-03 | (D) Rob MacGinley | vs | Maurizio Grassi | German (SS) win | Played for Cyber VASL round One SS - cut through me like Knofe thru butter - some good shots from US but not much else Tried the hidden sleeze troops on entry point but was discovered!!
2022-05-29 | (A) Will Willow | vs | K.Hannan | German (SS) win | Germans had all the luck in this one.
2022-05-13 | (D) Andy Goldin | vs | Stephen Worrel | German (SS) win | A well-balanced scenario. Our game came down to the last turn, with the Germans defeating my defending Americans in two CCs, winning him the game. I malf'd the MA of both my M10s doing essential intensive fire shots and later got one recalled while both my BAZ teams were out of action. I managed to hang on only due to some hot dice. Setup restrictions and the location of victory hexes compel the defender to split his force into thirds. Against that setup, the German need only defeat the Americans in detail before the clock runs out. Although they don't seem impressive, the German halftracks gave Stephen some good mobility to get behind the American line and force elimination due to failure to route. I didn't have all that much fun as the defender, as I watched my guys get chopped up while waiting for the clock to run out. A better approach for the American might be to use the first turn to run back to the last set of buildings and make that your redoubt. With sufficient forces the German won't be able to get behind you and you'll have a decent field of fire. Overall a nicely done scenario but I didn't really have all that much fun playing it.
2022-04-25 | (D) Indy Lagu | vs | Rob Oler | German (SS) win | Somehow I forgot to enter this one... it's now a year later. I don't remember much, but I did make a note that my opponent says he only won because he got a bit lucky...Maybe that tallies with other comments here. I don't remember what I thought at the time. Definitely worth a play! |
