Overview:

Assault gun crews were highly trained, elite artillery units assigned to provide close fire support to the infantry. All assault gun crews were volunteers up until 1944 and had proven in pre-war trials to be more accurate gunners than tank crews. In addition to close fire support, they also provided additional anti-tank capability. On the second day of Barbarossa, a German infantry unit was behind schedule in securing its objective, a Russian village near the Bug River. An assault gun platoon was sent forward to provide the necessary firepower. After the platoon leader conferred with the infantry commander, the Germans launched their coordinated attack. The assault guns preceded the infantry into the village, firing at targets of opportunity as they presented themselves. As they rounded a corner, they were faced with a Russian heavy tank. . .

2024-12-08(A) Mark Thompson vs Carl Nogueira Russian winAlbany 2024-Round 5. On of the most enjoyable and intense ASL games I've played. A brutal see-sawing 7 hour battle that ended at 2am with the building locations tied - and hence a Russian victory. At times, each player was alternately convinced that their cause was hopeful or hopeless (e.g., KV-1 mechanical break-down immobilization, Commissar sniper head shot, German 9-1 pin on 8+2 shot preventing seizure of two additional building locations in the penultimate turn). A fantastic scenario with an awesome opponent to cap off a great Albany tournament. A blast!
2024-11-22(A) Tuomo Lukkari vs Andreas Larsson German winSupporting fire 2024 1st round
2024-03-09(A) Andy Bagley vs Neil Brunger German winReally tough game, and couldn't have been closer. The first couple of turns were "shadow boxing", with both sides manoeuvring for position and little shooting as I attempted to surround the village. Things heated up when the Russian tanks arrived and I tried to force my way into the village from all side, and it became a case of last man standing. In the end, the Russians just lacked enough troops to stop me doing a final grab of buildings on the last turn, and I held just enough for the win.
2023-11-30(D) Rob Tyson vs Brian Sielski German win
2023-11-26(A) Steven Cummings vs Tim Osborne German win
2023-08-23(D) Shaun Andrews vs Chip Wertenberger German winWas schooled by an opponent who took advantage of every terrain feature and bad placemat of defensive positions. Felt as if I was slowly being encircled and helpless to extradite myself from the impending strangulation. Well played by Chip!
2023-03-23(D) David Garvin vs Charles Hammond German winPre game at Noreaster 2023
2022-12-16(A) Camille Garek vs Eric Walmetz German win
2022-01-15(D) Martí Cabré vs Òscar Oliver Russian winThe Germans advanced covering all the perimeter, forcing the Russians to slowly concede ground and killing some defenders, but good Russian defensive shots broke some attackers, slowing them. Then the German conceded in Turn 3 after my KV wrecked one of the StuG and the T-60 were about to overrun some German squads ill-positioned, and we did not have much time to play so we called it a day.
2021-11-24(D) Will Willow vs K. Hannan Russian winWent to the last turn and by the slimmest of margins.
2021-11-12(D) Will Willow vs Ed Beekman German winCalled after German 5. NTSO
2021-01-05(D) Andy Bagley vs Matt Ellis German winI got off to the worst possible start here when my KV1, set up behind a wall, was knocked out by a critical hit from the German 50mm mortar on its second shot! I never really recovered, although a few favourable die-rolls gave me a fighting chance for a while. In the end though, I made a couple of mistakes and his sniper broke a squad that was guarding my flank, so the Germans got round the back and it was all over. All credit to Matt though for a very well-planned attack from the south and west, keeping his StuGIIIs together, using plenty of smoke and avoiding any possible MG firelanes.
2020-09-30(A) Shane Pask vs Russian winBlew this one without any dice bias. My disorganised attack and misuse of the assault guns killed any chance of victory - need to use more smoke! Conceded turn 6 still short 9 buildings for victory. Definitely worth another playing. One StG fired its ONLY AP round at the KV to see it bounce off then the KV tank spent a whole turn in delay due to mechanical reliability and let the StG escape.
2020-08-22(D) Richard Jenulis vs Blake Ball German winCASL round 3. Things looked good for the Russians when the first Smoke shot rolled an 11 and the first fire attack drew the sniper to eliminate the 9-1 and break the MMG squad (who was out of play for the rest of the game). Turn 5 German DFFPh was devastating. Russians surrendered not having enough forces left to retake buildings and hold what I had.
2019-03-09(A) Paul Legg vs David Blackwood Russian win
2018-05-22(A) Jeff B vs Pierce Mason German win4.25 hrsI wonder how many games actually use the two flanking boards? There is time to use them but, for my part, I chose to attack straight up the gut. Even without multi-levels, there are a lot of building locations to control (41 to be exact) and neither side has much to spare. Once the Russian tanks came onboard German maneuvering was even more limited. This made for a rather static midgame that felt like a Red Barricades CG. Despite only having one good order tank, momentum shifted to the Germans when the middle tank of the Russian platoon fell into a cellar. A very good Turn 6 saw them increase their lead to 24:17 and the Russians felt that was too much to overcome so they conceded.
2017-10-28(D) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best Russian winTough fought scenario. Dan's initial drive has his Stug's out front without infantry support. I was able to take down two with some assistance when one of the Stug's malf'd its MA. Dan came up from the pond, which surprised me, so my Russians had to quickly move to meet the threat. Dan's boys were thrown back and slowed down enough to give the Russians a win. Dan's mortar and last Stug got three critical hits in the same Prep-Fire phase of Turn 5, that nearly took my Russians out of the game. A win by the skin of my teeth.

2010-02-19(D) Jeff T vs JVan Russian winAn active Russian sniper and a close combat loss of two squads on the Russian left flank doomed the Germans. Fun scenario that I would play again as either side.
