By 11:30 A.M. on the 14th, after 200 German tanks had assaulted the Tractor Works, men of the General Erwin Jaenecke's 389th Infantry Division burst into the long labryrinth of workshops. The eight thousand Guardsmen of Zholudev's division met the enemy head on in the factory complex and in the next forty-eight hours, five thousand of them became casualties. As the fighting moved into the housing district behind the factories, the Russians showed off their newly perfected technique of creating "killing zones" by mining streets and preparing ambushes.
