Overview:
The Tridentina Division led the survivors of the Italian 8th Army westwards toward safety, but one obstale remained – the town of Nikolajewka. Astride the Rostov-Moscow railroad, the town was in Russian hands and strongly held. General Luigi Reverberi, commander of the Tridentina, decided on a frontal attack on the Russian positions, with a wide flanking movement that he hoped would gain surprise. It was a desperate decision but perhaps the only one that might clear the way to safety.Attacker: Italian / German (Tridentina Division with attached Panzer elements)
