Overview:
The Tridentina Division led the survivors of the Italian 8th Army westwards toward safety, but one obstale remained the town of Nikolajewka. Astride the Rostov-Moscow railroad, the town was in Russian hands and strongly held. General Luigi Reverberi, commander of the Tridentina, decided on a frontal attack on the Russian positions, with a wide flanking movement that he hoped would gain surprise. It was a desperate decision but perhaps the only one that might clear the way to safety.

2012-10-02(D) Lee Bray vs Russian winI set up with troops throughout the board 12 village but with the church as a strongpoint containing a strong platoon, the HMG, the ATR, the 9-1 leader and with both AT guns in the buildings behind it covering each other and the centre of the village. The axis focussed their assault on the church with a more minor thrust into the village and some units dedicated to the flanking attack. The game developed into a fight for the church which see-sawed a little with Italian infantry gaining a toehold on the ground floor. However, the Russians were able to reinforce and looked like kicking the Italians out again and my opponent felt he had insufficient forces available to come back. He conceded at this point as he felt his plan of attack was flawed and unrecoverable.
