2013-09-03(A) X von Marwitz vs Alex Koestler German winA short nice scenario. It is important to understand the Victory Conditions correctly. What makes this game interesting is that the playing area is basically divided by some central patch of woods. As the German attacker you have to think about carefully which half you will attack with how many units - the same puzzle applies for the British on where to defend with what. Contemplation regarding this is not made easier by both sides only having two leaders and not many squads. Whatever the case, the German will need stone building hexes on both sides of the woods to bring home the win. Since the scenario is short, it might well happen, that units committed to one part of the playing area will not be able to shift to the other one in time to be brought to bear. I was attacking where the British had only few units (the rural part). My plan was to overwhelm that part and afterwards shift the units that took the farm up there down towards the village to block any counterattack and to secure the building hexes conquered in the middle by my other units. As it happened, the enemy Sniper first broke one of my few valuable squads near the farm (which had no leader support). I managed to SMOKE the farm, bring up the Flakpanzer up close and personal only to be stunned by a HS in spite of Armor Leader AND which afterwards broke my second valuable squad with final fire... So much for my plan to redeploy to the village. I had to move troops to the farm instead as I HAD to have it for any chance for victory. Consequently, my units in the village were short of infantry and had only 1 StuG after I lost the other parked in Bypass against better knowledge. After the enemy Sniper broke ANOTHER HS near the farm, things looked quite grim there. In the village, my 9-2 with HMG dealt some serious damage, but I had not enough boots on the ground there to make progress. At long last, the farm fell. But - horrors - my 9-2 suffered lethal fate and the 548+HMG broke at the edge of the village. I thought I lost it then because there seemed no chance to cross the street. I had one single pesky HS down at the bottom though - a threat in being. I started to move it into action in turn 4. It managed to step into the open ADJACENT to the hidden ATG, miraculously survived the 8-4TH and follwing effects roll unscathed only to be killed by a ROF shot just short of the door to the last missing stone building hex. Combined with some heroic and lethal movement at the edge of the woods across open street enough fire was triggered to allow one of my units to sneak through for the win.
2010-10-31(A) David Ramsey vs Tim Bunce British win(My) confusion with the VC cost me the game - confirm them with opponent first! (sorry Tim!)
