As spring arrived in the Crimea, the fortress of Sevastopol still stood defiant after resisting two offensives and a six month siege. A June offensive had XXX Corps attacking to break through Sevastopol’s eastern defenses. XXX Corp included a large Romanian contingent including the elite Vanatori de Munte (Mountain Hunters) of the 1st and 2nd Mountain Divisions. As XXX Corps reached the main Soviet defense line on Sapun Ridge on 28 June, the commander pressed his troops to force a breakthrough. Their opponents in the Independent Coastal Army, whose heroic defense was “encouraged” by ruthless political Commissars, were determined to hold their ground.
This was a rare ASL attack that worked as planned! With the 47L in O12 to cover the H8-N11 road, I sent the Romanian AEs and both StuGs at the fanatic strongpoint M15. Everything else hit Jim's extreme left flank to grab the Level 2 victory hexes and hit the village from the north. The StuGs smoked the guns, and the 60 LMOR kept rate long enough to take out one 76* crew before being disabled. It took hard fighting but once the village was encircled, I had the upper hand. Jim's comments: Losing M15 and Hill 494 early was bad, but lots of smoke and three early CHs were the difference. Having to hold fanatic strongpoint K15 and defend the north side of the village spread the Russians too thin. I was defeated in detail. Fun scenario though.

I was a bit wary of this scenario to begin with as I thought it could be very one-sided if one side got lucky early on. In the event that wasn't an issue; the luck swung back and forth but pretty much evened out in the end. As the Russians I defended the fanatic strongholds only lightly, and they fell quickly. I put all of my guns and MGs on the hills, firing down on the Axis forces as they moved towards the village. A combination of counter-fire, smoke and breakdowns rendered some of thisgunnery ineffective, but never all of it, so the Axis took losses, augmented by my very effective sniper (SAN of 5 and a lot of DRs meant he was busy!). The Axis forces reached the gully but couldn't get their infantry beyond it in sufficient numbers, so in the end I was able to hold the village as well as the hilltops to give me the win.

Very enjoyable scenario which swung first to the Soviets, then back to the Axis and then finely back to the Red Army when a mortar crew became instant heroes of the Soviet Union with three critical hits in the last two turns.

A real back-and-forth seesaw fight. A lucky shot broke his attempt to take back the strongpoint and it ended in my favour

Scenario started out well for the Axis minors as the Romanian mortar got on a rate of fire tear and took out a Russian squad manning a MMG on a hill. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there. The initial attack was repelled by the Russian INF and AA guns. They got on numerous rate of fire tears, essentially stopping cold the entire right pincer of the two-pronged attack. The Russian 9-1 with HMG also got into the act as the Romanian forces broke and wilted under fire. 4.5 squads KIA through attrition due to multiple attacks before the German StuGs could lay down smoke. By turn 4 the fanatic strongpoint had fallen to the Axis but the Russian village force was entirely intact and the Russians were still in strength on the hills. A final push was met with withering defensive fire and multiple ROF attacks finally led the Axis to concede. Looks like a very fun scenario, but the dice were with me (and the Russians) today.

Looks to be a good scenario despite a disastrous result for me. I can't remember ever seeing so many effective ROF tears.

Took over on turn two from a player who had to leave to go to work. Regrouped the scattered Romanian forces, then took the fight aggressively to the Russians, using tanks for smoke and infantry assault, and pushing the envelope with infantry. Had game in hand by about turn 5, Russian unable to dislodge Romanians from victory hexes in their MPh turn 6, so was able to hold on. Good game though, I want to play this one from the start.
