Acerno was a mountain village astride a tortuous and winding stretch of road leading north from Battipaglia. The road was one of two that connected the beachhead with Highway 7—the main highway to Rome. On 22 September, elements of the US 3rd “Rock of the Marne” Infantry Division closed on the village. The German rear guard, a reinforced company, was composed largely of Second Line Infantry. Unfortunately, for the Americans, the defenders are armed to the teeth.

Enjoyable game against a skilled opponent, but I never felt that the Americans had much of a chance. Wild luck swings for both sides.

The American attack was foreshadowed on the first roll with boxcars on a TH for WP from on of his mortars. After the boxcars, the remaining first turn progressed well with the American west force advancing up the German center attempting to drive a wedge dividing the German force. This was aided by skillfully maneuvering a MMG where it could lay down a Fire Lane down open ground on Board 10. The American force on the east set themselves up to cover the remaining open ground effectively pinning in place most of the German force on Board 10. The Americans in the center lined themselves up behind a stone wall when the Germans revealed a 81mm mortar and 75L AT gun in the brush right in front of them. Def Fire had not effect, but neither did Adv Fire. On the German turn, the mortar could only break one American MMC before being eliminated by rolling boxcars on an IF. The AT gun was able to wreck one American AFV on an IF shot from the AT gun. The rest of the German turn was spent skulking or trying to find a way to shift forces from Board 10 to reinforce the center, with moderate success. Miraculously, the German AT gun crew survived successive mortar, AFV, and infantry attacks from both Def Fire and Prep Fire. On the American turn, the Americans were forced to take increasingly desperate moves to neutralize the German gun. The result was a battlefield full of pinned or broken American units and all the Germans in good order, despite repeated use of FPF and IF. With so many buildings to capture and so little time, the Americans conceded.

The Americans went for the bd 46 city aiming for a round 3 victory (perhaps with chances for a round 4 victory), moving aggressively on the left and more cautiously on the right. After round 3 the Americans had 14 buildings on board 46 and 2 on board 10.

My Americans got a bloody nose on Turn 1 as Dan's AT Gun took out two hull down moving Shermans. On Turn 2 it took out my last Sherman by spinning twice in a building and then intensive firing. My 10-2 broke on Turn 1 and with that I lost the game on the first two turns. To get 5 x the number of stone buildings as the current player turn seems impossible to me and then having to get them all...well that feels like a bridge too far if the Americans are injured early as in my case.

Not an easy one for the Americans I reckon – the Germans may be attacked from two sides but they have a lot of firepower. The options seem to be (a) concentrate forces to take the southern part of the village first, which risks being too slow or (b) try a ‘broad front’ attack, which I did and proved insufficient to break the German defence. Not helped by some unfortunate DRs, and by my trying to guess the location of his HIP units and getting it 100% wrong! By the start of turn 4 I had taken heavy losses and made little progress, so conceded. All credit to Neil for a very effective defence though.

2016 Sioux City ASL; pick-up game. As is the case with most of the games I play with Randy, this was a close one. Randy is a great player and you cannot afford to make any mistakes when playing him. I moved a bit too slow on the lower village. A screen of troops inhibited my infantry's entry into the main VC village just enough. He used crazy intensive fires from his 75 INF guns and slowed my infantry even more. A nice placement of troops (broken and otherwise) surrounding the last VC hex on he last turn disallowed me getting into it - although I did have a very small chance... oh well. This is a fun scenario with a lot of things going on!

Two turns down and the Americans are well inside the Board 10 Village. The Shermans are all intact and will soon drive on Board 46. My guns are all still hidden at the current time. My Germans have to hold out in Turn 3. Game was not completed.

A nicely unusual situation with the US attacking from two opposing directions into a village overlooked by level 3 hills. I was the US and everything went well for the first turn as I revealed a couple of German Dummies and was poised to attack into the village on turn 2. Things progressed well on Bd10, but unravelled on Bd 46 as my attack suffered a bloody nose with a fair few breaking units. That mess took me a turn to sort out which set back my timetable. My setup and plan was flawed as I had not thought enough about how long it would take to reach some of the Bd 46 buildings. In the end, I accounted for all but one of the German vehicles quite quickly and pushed forward capturing board 10 handily, but was too slow on Bd 46. By the end I was 5 buildings short of victory and conceded at the end of US T6. A good scenario which I would play again although it seems quite tight - there's not much margin for error for the US, but this may apply to the Germans too.

Kevin attacked from both sides of both boards. He had some poor rolls early on but it still came down to a last CC in which I got lucky and ambushed him then snuck away to be able to take back control of 1 building. Very fun scenario.

Americans tried coming in on board 10 and then attempting to sweep south. I had set up w/ more coverage on bd 46 thand bd 10 due to there being more victory locations on bd46. This ended up working to my advantage since he simply did not have enough time to take all the bldgs in the end. I was calculating each turn how many he would need to capture to win. It was definitely a challenging scenario. I'm thinking the Americans have to go from 46 to 10 or attack both villages simultaneously to win this one.

Front line broken on 2 fronts at once, this one was over by turn 2. I set up too far back, being intimidated by the tanks and big mortars on the hill.
