Operation Goodwind had begun a day earlier. The Ulster Rifles Regiment was advancing towards Troarn when C Company began encountering heavy resistance from a church on their left flank. Supporting armor was unable to effectively engage the church. Finally, Sergeant W. Sharkey, commander of the lead platoon, led an attack on a German machinegun crew that was defending the church, killing them.
