In the days following the landings at Anzio, Allied forces held onto “The Factory”. These buildings stood to the south of Carroceto on slightly raised ground and dominated the surrounding countryside. The Germans blunted the first tentative probes from the area, but now seized the initiative and would attempt to destroy the bridgehead. Two mixed Kampfgruppen were assigned to eliminate the Allied presence in the Factory. A series of small attacks eliminated or pushed back the forward companies of the London Irish Guards, exposing the main defenses of the Factory. However, the Allies were boosted by the timely arrival of American M10 tank destroyers.
