Overview:

By April 1944, the final curtain was about to fall on the 32-month battle for the Crimean peninsula, which had tied down a million Soviet and Axis soldiers, airmen and sailors. for no real strategic purpose. Between 8 and 11 April, the main Soviet effort smashed through Axis lines at Perekop, while secondary forces broke out from their lodgment on the Sivash Sea and the Kerch bridgehead. Despite the fact that the 17th Army was in full retreat, behind enemy lines and suffering heavy losses, Hitler would not authorize the evacuation of the Crimea. He falsely believed his army should be able to defend Sevastopol for months, as the Soviets had done, in 1941-1942. At dawn on April 14 the vanguard of the Soviet 19th Tank Corps reached Backchisaray, north of Sevastopol where an ad-hoc German kampfgruppe delayed them for 12 critical hours. This allowed Lieutenant-General Schwab, commanding the Rumanian Mountain Corps to deploy his three Mountain Divisions on Sevastopol's perimeter. They would bear the brunt of the Soviet attack the next day.

2024-05-25(A) fabrizio da pra vs Andrea PagniA Russian winI bought the .50 HMG and placed in the obvious lvl 1, it rarely did anything but at least my opponent was scared for some time to stay on his lvl 1.
I was able attacking in the center en masse to get to the hill and run down the road with the help of some smoke.
The Rumanians were a tough nut to crack, passing multiple 1MC end even a couple of 3MC.
My tanks went mainly to the hill, to help get into the main village.
The gun was behind the village to guard it from encirclement.
Little by little i crept forward and neutralized most fire points with mass and tank fire.
on turn 5 I got into 5-6 houses and manages to destroy one of the stugs by flanking it, and the other one broke the main armament.
My tank also suffered terrible 3 MA break but with no stug functioning left and his desperate attempt to destroy one of my tanks failed my opponent conceded.
It is a fun scenario for the Russian, but a static defence for the Rumanian.
2023-06-14(A) David Shannon vs Tim Reade Russian winAs Russian I went all in for the 50 cal HMG and it worked a treat due to ample rate tears, especially early. It may have been somewhat difficult for the Russian force to reach the woods line and town otherwise. Still the Rumanians held on grimly - with surprise tank traps and timely reinforcements helping immensely - but poor luck at critical moments compromised their valiant stand too often in the end.
I suspect Tim's fine defensive set-up, strategy and play would have proven victorious if given a reasonable amount of luck on another day.
2023-05-12(A) Andy Bagley vs Gordon Jupp Romanian/German winDidn't really come close in this one, wondering how those who won with the Russians managed it. I attacked mainly in the centre and discovered almost all of the Romanian fortifications there, so made some progress but it was far too slow to achieve the VCs in just six turns. Some unfortunate DRs mind you, particularly early on: I spent all my at-start SWPPs on a .50cal HMG on the 1st floor, which achieved very little and only got RoF once in the whole game. Meanwhile, a well-placed Romanian 50mm mortar on a rate tear devastated my smaller flanking force to the west, then clobbered a bunch of Russians using armoured assault in the centre.
Virtually no smoke for the Russians in this scenario (my sDs and infantry smoke grenades both failed). If there's another way of crossing open ground in the face of heavy enemy fire, I haven't found it yet!
