The initial phase of the Commonwealth campaign against the Vichy forces in Syria was proving tougher than expected. These French, former allies of the Commonwealth, were resilient opponents. Merdjayoun was symbolic of this as a town, located only a few miles south of the Syrian border, had already been captured and lost by the Australians. Unwilling to again lose this vital position, the Vichy stationed Legionnaires and tanks to defend the assault against Medjayoun. Two companies of Australians from the 2/25th Battalion moved to attack from the west, while Australian pioneers demonstrated from the south to tie the Vichy garrison down.

I think I lost the scenario on setup. I was heavy on the north side
of the board. I think a better play is to come right up the middle
and keep both options (the victory building or .ge. 9 multi-hex
buildings) viable.
I would happily try this again. It's yet another interesting design
by Andrew Rogers.

The Aussie went after the multi-hex building first. But after some beating they switched to the single building VC. Since the multi hex condition was still attainable I had to disperse my forces, on top of that the 9-2 BH to 10-2 and got hero status. of 4th turn he went for the building but my R35 saved the day breaking 2 and 1/2 squads and surviving the melee, on my last turn there was a wall of bodies around the building preventing access to the second hex and an R35 and a concealed squad of mine in melee with 1 squad and the 10-2. he tried to take off the tank with the leader but didn't succeded and the game was over.

I opted to push all my forces to take the church. I made it into the church in the second turn but only 1 of the 2 hexes and Gene left both tanks in the building making my job much harder.
Good shooting and terrible MC rolls left 6 Aussie squads broken at the end of Turn 2 and only 1 rallied in Turn 3. Equally poor MC and TC rolls broke the back of the Australians. I couldn't even pass a PAATC to get anyone else into the hexes with the tanks so it was over at the end of turn 3. The Vichy had the ability to fill both hexes with troops and still had the tanks in place.

The Aussies split their force and attacked from the top and bottom right. Good deployment of smoke allowed the Aussies to get a foothold in the buildings on the right-hand side although they would subsequently lose some of those gains. On the top progress was better and despite being attacked by one of the French tanks they were able to bypass it and get a foothold in the Victory building. Once that was secured the French were not in a position to take it back and despite some success against the Aussie forces on the right it was an Aussie victory.

This one is an uphill struggle for the Australians - literally! Yes, they are stealthy in CC, but usually have to move/advance uphill into buildings, resulting in CX that more than negates this. Even so, I nearly made it, but fell just short of taking the key victory building.

A bloody fight down to the final HtH CC in the Victory building. The Aussies have been beaten on their CCs throughout the game, but blew the final 2-1 HtH by rolling an 11. Good game Dennis, well played as he kept enough Vichy forces to secure the Victory building.

Setting up as the Vichy, I decided to put most of my units in the south close to the I6 building. The most frustrating issue was finding somewhere to put the MTR. Even using a Spotter (C9.3) was not going to help much.
John attacked in the north. I was hoping that I could regroup my units fast enough to stop the Aussies short of the VC target of nine multi-hex buildings.
John's attack plan was sound - strip concealment with a "run and bump" by leaders/HS then win the Ambush dr. The Vichy defenders were gobbled up by the Aussies in H-t-H CC.
But time was short for the men from Down Under. Stout defence of the O4 and V4 buildings meant they didn't have enough time to grab the last buildings.

March Madness Round 1. The Aussies could have won when I6 was left undefended but we corrected that. Otherwise seems very hard to get the needed amount of multi-hex buildings as the Aussies.

March Madness Virtual Tournament. Neal had a good first turn attack that swarmed the French defense but lost a critical CC and the French sniper took out a couple of squads on the Aussie flank. After that the attack bogged down and it became clear that it would be harder and harder for victory. Lots of broken units on the Allied side became an issue. Good game, but it is hard on the Australians.

Dan tried a broad front attack and lost his 9-2 to a Sniper Activation, then his whole stack went down to the leader loss MC of +2. After that the ANZAC lost all momentum and could not get up the hill conceding after turn 3 with only three Good Order squads left and facing many more Vichy. Good game but recommend giving the allies the balance.

Opponent tried a broad assault to pressure the Vichy. I had spread out evenly along the entry sides and was able to bring enough firepower on to seriously slow him on turn one drawing blood with the mortar on a boxcar morale check. A couple of good rolls on aggressive moves in turn 2 and the Aussies were down 2.5 squads with little to show for it. Seems really tough to attack with few numbers advantage and trying to drive 8 morale french out of buildings...
