Toridasu!Something of a dicey game, with few long range weapons, largely with B11, and Light Dust.
Rich came on using the northern ridge to protect his entry, which could have ended badly for him as the 76 ART was facing that section. 76 malf'ed on 2nd or 3rd shot without a hit, and promptly disabled.
The Mongol MMGs were pretty good, especially using firelanes, which slowed up the cavalry, but collapsed in a heap from the inevitable 1MC from a 6fp attack (inevitable because it had to happen being the target of much fire).
Jap tanks ran the length if the board to take furthest hill, and then return to the central hill. Jap victory sealed in the fional CC Phase when a Mongol sqd got reduced trying to withdraw from melee into a vacant 3rd level hex.

War of the RatsThe Germans' main attack came from the northeast in an attempt to get an early foothold into the VC buildings. Out west, a diversionary force kept the Russians from shifting reinforcements to the east. An early push from the Germans was met with well place fire from Russian 1st line squads forcing the Germans to temporarily fall back. Russian conscripts attempted a mad dash to try and bolster their positions, but the German counterattack arrived before they could get to the front lines and soon they had a foothold across the street. The Russians withstood withering fire and were able to lock the Germans in melee in several buildings. It was the Germans who first broke out of melee and began to push west to envelope the Russians currently engaged with a small force of Germans still across the street. The Germans broke another melee and moved to establish a defense in anticipation of the expected Russian ad hoc shock group to come... but for the Russians, the reinforcements, late to arrive, we forced to through everything at the eastern building. Husum HotfootI set the 81mm mortar up in a forward location and was lucky to score a hit on one of Rob's Wasps. The other Wasp was abandoned on a failed MC and this put a big hole in the Brit's firepower. Despite losing a 3-2 CC the Germans were able to hold their own and withdraw in good order. The HMG at Level 1 made open ground approaches in the centre suicidal and in the end Rob just ran out of time. Nicho11
Hammer TimeThe Germans attacked hard and quickly neutralized a MMG on the hill. The Belgians were pushed back from the hill but the panzers infiltrate their rears and flanked som defenders. The AT gun was unable to pierce German armor and the crew ended eliminated by MG fire. The French armor arrived and shocked a panzer but they still were not able to destroy it. With half of Belgian infantry unable to defend and a German force still intact, my opponent resigned. Lots of bad luck in the Belgian TK whereas German fire was quite deadly accurate. Boot's Scoot and BoogieThe Germans had 1 good smoke roll with a squad and then everything went downhill, barely ever passing a morale check, among other problems. I must've rolled about 6 boxcars for the Germans and nothing bad for the Dutch until about turn 3. There's a fun scenario in the weeds on this one, but I think the Germans could use an MMG or something other than a dinky mortar. The split victory condition is neat and adds some tension Jobbo_Fett

Late for ChowGermans pushed right up the middle as expected but the Americans had to spread the defense in order to discourage an attempt to push hard down one of the flanks.
Americans kept falling back and harassing but not really able to do any significant damage.
Turns 5-6 saw the Germans pushing to the last hedgerow. The Americans managed to do some damage on both flanks forcing the main German push directly into the middle.
American 6 saw the US being able to setup a strong defense in the last 2-hexes of the board and channel the Germans into a small corridor for an exit. The superior US firepower, especially with PB fire and also a number of FPF chances caused too much damage to the Germans for them to make the necessary 8VP.		 sdedier
No Time for TigersRobert attempted to extricate his Tiger instead of shooting it out. The first shot hit the hull with APDS and could not penetrate, the next 76(w) retained rate and hit, the rate shot on the next MP expenditure hit ... that's a recall result, but the roll was 1,1 and turned the vehicle into a burning wreck. The rest was cleaning up. Should have shot it out. With the -1 AL and the large Sherman targets, the Tiger can handle itself against multiple Shermans. Larry

Operation HubertusDay 1 was a real grind fest with a gridlocked south, Germans shut out of the Q34 factory, and some real back and forth over the R38 factory which nearly shattered the entire Pioneer Coy in charge there. Some moderate gains were made in the center which left Dean concerned about getting cutoff. He pushed a counter offensive in the north with almost overran the Germans there. We took a rest on day 2 with both sides stacking up for the next assault. Day 3 opened with the fury of Hell as German assault tactics vastly improved from the first day in both application and dice rolls. OBA mortar smoked chokes out the Russian deathstack towers as german snipers picked them off. The opening assault led to 15 stone locations captured in the first turn. As German units advanced into the growing gap in the Russian line and German kdr began reaching 4 to 1, Russia conceded once the realization hit that the main German offensive surrounded and squeezed factory Q34 and sturm companies quickly advanced up under his deathstacks. feralhuntsman
Wons EnoughThe Dutch defended the tree line for a two turns and then fell back. The MMG was in the steeple and the MRT on the hill, though it had limited sight. The Germans had a hard time passing MCs and their vehicles were stunned often. We called the game in Turn 6 with few Germans able to rid the Dutch from their positions. A unique event happened as the Dutch sniper broke two half squads guarding prisoners, the prisoners revolted and killed one of the half squads in Melee, the other one died in the subsequent Melee. It forced the Germans to back up and not go forward. Good scenario, might be hard on the Germans, but the balance is significant. dmareske

Unfamiliar LandQuick play with a short, tight firefight. Germans pushed T1 forces down N edge, with T2 forces secondary push on S edge. Established firebase in central woods (mortars and lmgs) to interfere with Russian repositioning and cover any need to shift main attack axis. Which is almost guaranteed to happen when Russian T3 reinforcements enter due to their unique entry options. This time they came in literally right on top of my northern push just hexes from exit, wiping out all but one sqd. However I was able to shift remaining emphasis to the southern push and started T6 with enough poised to exit to ensure victory, and Russian had nothing left to stop them. T2 German force has enough VP to win on its own, let alone with anything else that gets off. Seems important to keep the Russian spread out, and especially get him to commit his reinforcements one way, then make an exit push the other. Good fight and great opponent. RMod

By turn two, the Americans were down to two unbroken squads and were down two AFVs including one of the Shermans and he decided to call it at that point. 88s at ZonHearing reports of 88s in the area, Americans proceeded cautiously probing the hill, the eastern route, as well as the route through the village of Zon. Determining the village to be the "safer" route, the Americans marched in full force only to come face to face with a Flak 18.

[unbeknownst to us SK2 newbies, we missed the rule (1.2.6- last sentence) that disallows the 88's from setting up HiP in buildings]

After falling breaking and falling back, the Americans pressed the assault routing out the 88's crew from the squads that probed the hill outside the village giving their broken comrades enough time to rally back and continue the advance into Zon.

However, the courageous moment was short-lived as the squads moved into Zon from the hill they came under fire from the other, undiscovered 88 (also hidden in a building... see above). Rallying back once again, the Americans had had enough and enveloped the German squads nearby intending to bypass the gun. In doing so, the remaining Germans on the hill moved to take up positions on the ridge line to deny the Americans an easy advance to the south.

With time against them, the Americans rallied once more and pressed the advance. Overwhelming the Germans defenses the Americans cleared Zon and proceeded south out of the city to seize the bridge over the Wilhelmina River. (VASL Log)		 toddgrx

Point 171In DftB Point 171, playing the British against Fred, I chose a reverse slope defence on the hillock: the 88 hidden on the position, the 40L farther back, and the ATRs covering the sangars and foxholes at close range. The idea was to avoid revealing the GUNs too early, since with Italian vehicles moving, vehicular dust and Light Dust, long-range three-dice shots did not look very attractive. The logic was not wrong, but I applied it too cautiously: I let the Italian tanks and infantry get too close, and they reached my line almost together, without being properly separated, except partially on my right flank. At that point the defence stopped being orderly and became a close-range brawl around the sangars and foxholes. The GUNs still did their job: the 88 killed two tanks, while the 40L killed two more and shocked another; there was also a very ASL moment when an overconfident Italian SPG came too close to the Indian infantry and was destroyed in melee. However, the early breakdown of the MMG and mortar from Turn 2 hurt badly, reducing my firepower against the Italian infantry, while the ATRs wasted huge chances: two adjacent underbelly hits with no effect, plus three more close-range shots that achieved nothing. The Italian tanks in my rear were also a major problem, not only because they threatened the positions, but because they caused failure to rout situations and the capture of broken squads, speeding up the collapse of the defence. Even so, the game was still alive on Turn 5: I still controlled four well-scattered foxholes, but with no GUNs left and two tanks plus one SPG still running, the Italians probably had enough strength to finish the job. The technical lesson is fairly clear: in this scenario the British probably need to start firing earlier, not necessarily to destroy everything at long range, but to slow the Italians down, separate tanks from infantry, create friction and disrupt the timing of the attack. I also really liked the Dust rules: they add uncertainty without slowing the game too much, and they force you to think less mechanically about range, movement and fire opportunities. A Midnight ClearThis was part of a mini-tournament featuring night scenarios. Both of us bid for the Germans but Jamie's bid of 2 against my bid of 0 was enough for me to play the Americans. I chose substitution of a 9-2 leader for the 9-1 as the US balance.
The Germans started by sending two squads and a leader up the right flank with the rest going through the middle along the road. The reinforcing group also went up the middle. The initial moves went well. Greg rolled a lot boxcars in this game and one the right flanking force was soon down a half squad and leader with the remaining squad disrupted. Where I went wrong was in having the 9-2 and two MG manning squads remain in the centre initially rather than head north east for the exits. I failed to appreciate that broken units could remain in situ when ADJACENT enemy units. The Germans managed to exit one crew and this put the onus on the Americans to get someone off. Basically, my guys failed every morale check that they took and this ensured that they came up short. There was a lot craziness though. At one point, Jamie failed 10 consecutive stars shell attempts and his morale checks weren't anything to write home about either. Fun game though. (VASL Log)		 Dougban

Second WindSome bad luck for the Russians losing two tanks to Recall after they tried to fix the MA. The main attack came on board 49, but the tanks separated with riders trying to outflank the Germans. The Germans lost their HMG on the first shot, but were still able to slow the Russian advance . Called the game in turn 6 just before the last Germans were set to arrive. dmareske
Groves of DamourMartin conceded at the end of the Australian turn 4 with the French force down to only one good order squad.
In turn one I advanced half squads into Martin’s forward positions to strip his squads of concealment. Although this strategy cost me two half squads it made his positions more vulnerable.
There was plenty of time for the Australians to concentrate overwhelming fire power and advanced towards the victory hexes. They greatly helped by not needing to advance through open ground.

Let Us PreyBad luck by the British on their initial shots wasn't punished by the Italians who needed time to dismount. While the Italians did manage to destroy 2 British ACs and a Carrier, it was enough to delay their opportunity to get to the victory location(s).

Speaking of, there are either errors or the scenario is built incorrectly. The objective also allows for the chance to claim victory as the Italians despite not moving behind the minefield/wire line. Not worth replaying. It gets reprinted as GA-4 Prince Albert's Own.		 Jobbo_Fett

Having traded blood for soil all game, they had a HS with a leader and a berserk squad in melee elsewhere. The Americans took a 12-3 getting a K3 -- broken HS and leader in front of the bridge. Two more shots to take clear the path. The 8-0 and squad have to get across. The German HS lead by an 8-1 for a 2-3 rolls 9. And the Americans reciprocate and pin, both of them. The Americans were already across with the 10-2 leader but he was lonely and that was game. Larry

The ProfessionalsUsed Yugoslavian defense from AAR online. Most squads set-up in Manor. Each of the southern woods hexes along the wall were defended. AT guns in O3 and Q1. The Germans attacked across the hill down the road and except for ht's with 1.5 squads which went north around the orchard. The Yugoslav's got off several MOL attacks but 2 resulted in the attacking squads breaking with a flame counter in their own hex. The Q1 AT missed its shot and was broken in return. The Yugo squads in the woods each broke in turn and were lost to failure to rout. A German Mk4 tank landed smoke in 7Q1 and another tank drove through it, causing the other AT gun to miss its shot and the game was soon over. Guru Bob

The Australians want to take a hilltop village from defending Vichy French represented by Légion Étrangère and support by a pair of not-radioless (!) R-35 tanks.
All buildings are ground level and Rowhouse bars do not exist (but are not Open Ground). Deployment is limited and H-t-H allowed,
The scenario is 4.5 Turns short, the Aussies enter from offboard.

12 defending squads (50% each Elite and 1st Line), 9-1, 8-0, 7-0, MMG, 3x LMG, ltMTR, 6x "?" and the said R-35s.
The Aussies have 15 squads, 6x Elite, 9x 1st Line, 9-2, 9-1, 8-0, 7-0, 4x LMG, 2x ATR, 2x DC.

To win, the Aussies either need to control one particular building or otherwise roughly 75% of all mulithex buildings to win at game end.

The attacking Aussies face two main challenges:
The first is the terrain. They have to attack uphill vs. stone buildings.
The second is time. They have only 4.5 turns to pull it off.
There are no smoke making capabilities for the attacker besides the squads' smoke exponent. The 9-2 is certainly their main asset, H-t-H will surely "shorten" some of the CCs. And remember - the attacker is the Australians...

ROAR had this scenario 25 Aussies / 42 Vichy at the time of our playing. With this number of playings and the remarkable difference in victory, it may count as established, that the defending Vichy French have an edge. After having played the scenario, I do agree. Attacking uphill against stone buildings, the entry of which will cost 4MF or will make you CX if you advance into them, which will often go in hand with not being able to maintain or regain Concealment, is a tough call. You only have 3 squads advantage in numbers and that 9-2 Leader. The limiting of deployment is likely aimed at preventing an "army of halfsquads" seeking out H-t-H combat against unfavorable odds. As the Aussies are allowed to enter from two sides (short north side and long west side), the French will not be able to solidly cover all approaches. But until the Aussies gain the hill, their going will be slow and impeded by the terrain even without Vichy opposition.

In our playing, I had the attacking Aussies. Looking at my opponent's defense, I felt quite lucky that the vector of attack I had hoped to use was not strongly defended. Thus my initial charge went quite well. However, I made one grave mistake by overlooking a LOS which would have enabled a 4FP @ -1 shot, that could have proved utterly disasterous. Luckily, my opponente overlooked it as well until it was too late and my units had already passed. Besides that, I don't believe that I made any serious mistakes in excecution. Nevertheless, I felt pressured more than half a dozen times to take risks that I would not normally take in ASL - mainly exposing the 9-2 to dangerous shots and going into CC CX, declaring H-t-H and "hope for the best".

During the first two Turns, I was mainly struggling uphill against my opponent who was reluctantly and slowly falling back. During this time, my Aussies were whittled down losing a squad and two or three halfsquads with nothing really to show for it. This forced me to seek doubtful CCs. Luckily, three of those proved utterly disasterous for the defender, because Infiltration allowed me to re-DM a stack with three units after having eliminated a 9-1, 458+LMG. In the second one, my CX squad prevailed against his non-CX squad, again allowing Infiltration into his back and grabbing Control of a Building for good measure. This same squad then withstood some bashing and when it came to CC against unfavorable odds, it contrived to kill enemy infantry to infiltrate out into the most important building, of which it gained Control in doing so (relinquishing Control of the building it left). Now, the Vichy French would have to root me out of the "you have it - you win it"-building in his back, which was a catastrophe for him.

Although the Vichy French were able to decide three more H-t-H CCs in their favor, it came at a cost and for a brief time, kept the French occupied. Since I had gained the hill by that time, finally I was able to take advantage of that by being able to move faster than merely creeping range. I was able to place the two Aussie DCs, but they only had marginal effect. Because I had taken enough buildings but one (one of which was the "you have it - you win it" building and was in a strong position to withstand French fire in the last 4th French Turn and would have been afterwards able to do all sorts of "last turn shenanigans", my opponent conceded at the End of Aussie Turn 4. The tanks had only played a minor role in our game.

Although I somehow contrived to pull off a win, I felt that skill alone was not sufficient for that. The ROAR rating of 25 Aussies / 42 Vichy reflects the challenges the Aussies are facing pretty well. Time restraints forced me to take undue risks too many times, but I was lucky to get away with that more often than not. I was extremely lucky in some desicive CCs enabling some unforseen, devastating Infiltrations, which proved pivotal.

Escape from Velikiye LukiGermans did a board-edge creep to avoid activating Russians. The 10-2 blew away the Russians he encountered and Mark didn't make a Freedom of Movement dr <3 in 7 tries. So, the Germans exited more than enough VP with the bulk of the Russians still under No Move restriction.

Turning the TablesBritish defense was based on AAR from a blog. It consisted of 4 clusters of fortifications across the front and a solid line of mines across the board. The guns were placed unhidden in fortifications. The German attack started in the southwest, but intended to swing around the SD5 dune to cross the mines in the center. The PZJg's entered in the south and stayed in the sunblindness zone of the southern Brits, after which they moved north to hide behind the dunes until the guns were subdued. The 10-2 set up a kill stack on dune SD8 and started clearing out the center, eventually taking down the AA gun. The Stukas waited patiently for the AA gun and HMG to be subdued then bombed the AT Gun. At this point all but the ht's started heading forward. A stack of sappers cleared a hole in the mines and the Brits started rolling 2's, 3's and 4's, filling the field with heroes, fanatics and berserkers. Still almost all defenders were subdued and the Germans exited both ht's after they each bogged. The tanks were eliminated to a CH and a sniper STUN. Guru Bob
To The Cider CrossroadsIn the scenario the Germans attempt to prevent the Canadians from crossing the playing area to exit a number of EVP, at least some of which must be infantry.

Grain is changed to Vineyards and Orchards to Olive Groves and any Bog Check receive a +1 DRM.
The Canadians have 10 squad equivalents, three leaders, two each LMG, MMG, ltMTR, PIAT and are reinforced in Turn 2 by two Sherman tanks, one of which has an 8-1 AL.
Initially, the Germans only have 3 squad equivalents, a single 9-1 Leader, one LMG, one HMG and a randomly modified small number of "?" counters. Their support consists of a 50L ATG and a 81mm MTR along with some fortifications consisting of 24 mine factors and a 1-3-5 Pillbox. In Turn 4 German reinforcements arrive in the form of 3 squads, an 8-0 and a LMG. PF are available but at this time in the year only with a range of 1.

The issue for the Germans is - of course - that they are seriously outnumbered. There does not seem to many choices of where most of the initial Germans can sensibly set up. The fortifications and Guns will hopefully present some unwanted surprises for the Canadians. The German reinforcements are supposed to be a plug to block the Canadian exit after the initial Germans have been mostly overcome. If the Germans contrive to slow the Canadians sufficiently in the initial turns and maybe snipe a tank, then things might get close. However, if the Germans fail in reducing the effective numbers of the Canadians or if the few initial Germans go down to quickly, the German reinfocements might be too little too late. Or in the worst case, it might be over even before the German reinforcements arrive.

Unfortunately for my defending Germans, this was "one of these games"...
While the very start seemed promising - a scout HS was killed by mines, however, revealing the location of the minefield. And my Sniper broke an enemy squad.
Alas, that was about the sum of everything I was going to achieve in this game except that my Sniper wounded the weakest leader later. Besides Pinning one unit or two, I simply got no effects at all. My opponent "found" every last minefield, but apart from the first HS, they just walked through and one of his tanks clanked through an AT minefield creating a TB. The other tank drove into the sights of my ATG, which found no APCR and the normal AP round bounced off. The Canadians stepped into the Bore Sighted hex of the 81mm MTR - no effect. They blundered into the Bore Sighted hex of the HMG, which I could not take advantage of because I had to commit its shot elsewhere before. Their "kill stack" walked into the Bore Sighted hex of the ATG, which could not hit them. None of my weapons ever had ROF. So the essential "whittling and weakening" part on which this scenario hinges, did not quite work.

In turn my ATG Gun crew broke on its first MC never to come back. One of his HS advanced out of a minefield unscathed into a concealed HS of mine for CC. I gacked the Ambush and got no result. He rolled snakes to generate a 8-0 leader to add insult to the injury. Next turn, because I was doubly Area Aquired by one of his tanks at 2 hex point blank range, I had to get away my "killer stack" of 9-1, 467+HMG. I also had preserved a concealed 467 shrouded in his Smoke. So to do some shifting and evading and under pressure to achieve anything at all, I calculated my chances concluding that advancing into CC with all these forces vs. his unconcealed HS + 8-0 leader would be the worthwhile thing to do: I had -3 vs. his 0 on the Ambush roll. The odds would be 3:1 @ -1 without Ambush and -2 with Ambush. What could possibly go wrong? I contrived to gack the Ambush despite favorable -3 odds. Still, my roll was good enough to kill his units. But wait, he rolled snakes again, generating another leader - a 8-1 for good measure. Recalculating, my odds shifted from 3:1 to 2:1 and the effect was a Casualty Reduction instead of a kill, which selected the just created 8-1. May he burn in hell! Needless to say, due to his second snakes, both my 467s and the 9-1 died and the HMG was destroyed for good measure. Which was just as well, because besides my 228 crew holding on to the 81mm MTR and a further away halfsquad with LMG, I had no units whatsoever at the end of my Turn 2.

But I am not the kind to give up.
When the jeering Canadians ran for the exit, I did get some more effects as I now recall: The MTR crew broke a passing squad (forfeiting the use of the MTR but placing Residual FP). My LMG HS broke another unit. But that was it. One of his tanks then trundled obliviously through my AT-minefield as aforementioned, thereby leaving a trailbreak and my faintest hopes dashed.

As had no unit left able to fire at Canadian units worth sufficient EVP to simply waltz off unopposed in his upcoming Turn 4 and before the arrival of my reinforcements, my sole remaining Good Order MTR crew raised the white flag to concede at the end of Canadian Turn 3.

Knaust's 'FaustsMy British couldn't roll anything. My first Sherman 75* smoke attempt and first roll of the game was 12. Tank would be recalled. I would break the upfront Germans but couldn't move my Firefly bogged and I did not pass a single Morale Check...not one..Pinned once and broke about 6 squads and ELR'd 3 of those. My dice bent me over the entire game. Every roll had at least one 6...so it was a futile and completely unfun game. I conceded on Turn 4, because there are more fun things to do than watch your dice screw you over all night. Great win for Dan. grumblejones
Quiet DesperationThe scenario came down to the wire thanks to some very lucky rolls by the British. Its interesting to try and figure out a good defensive setup for the British while trying to deny some initial movement by the Germans. The tanks aren't invincible in the face of the French SW and both sides have a decent selection of SW to achieve their goals. My only complaint is that the scenario doesn't clarify if the British should have captured use penalties, which is typically stated afaik - it only says that unqualified use doesn't apply. Panzers using Smoke Dischargers can be a game changer. Jobbo_Fett

Monastery HillGreeks tried to defend both hills and the crossroads. The Italians attacked on turn one on three prongs over hill 654 and either flank. Italians squads broke but were able to generally rally. The left Italian flank focused on the crossroads area to prepare for the turn 3 reinforcements to push on over hill 621 and the valley road. The Italians had 5 squads and a leader go berserk, which was able to overwhelm 3 Greek hexes and win in CC. Effective Italian fire broke most of the rest of the squads and hill 733 fell by turn 6. Bertoldo the BravePlayed through this twice as the Germans, getting clobbered both times. Stephen defended forward in force in both games. First attempt I could hardly get out of the setup area as I got thoroughly diced getting across the street. After losing much of my infantry to American GIs equipped with laser beams for an advance of a few hexes, we decided to restart.

In my second attempt against basically the same setup, I managed to make better progress, getting as far south as the 15-hexline. I managed to kill off quite a bit of his infantry and one of the TDs at considerable cost to myself. By Turn 5 it was clear I would not have nearly enough time to clear the victory areas, so we called it another American victory.

In both games, the strong forward defense worked for Stephen as I didn't have the dice to break him at the start, even with massive firepower. As much as I wanted to simply bypass knots of resistance, the narrow frontage of the map made that impossible and I had to attempt to defeat them in detail, and ran out of time. 		Agoldin

There's some updates to the scenario pages and the "My Page" that help find fun scenarios to play, based on other player's recommendations.

On the scenario page, you can see other scenarios that have been rated highly, based upon user ratings who have rated the initial scenario highly. (It's all a bit complex but it does try to quell the problem of good, popular scenarios outranking lesser played scenarios that might have a higher correlation).

On your "My Page" I've updated the games played and the publications owned tables to be a little more useful, and made an effort to speed up the rendering of the page, too. There's also a scenario recommender on there that takes into account scenarios that you have rated highly, and the input of other players - and checking that you haven't already played that scenario before (no promises on scenarios that have been released multiple times though, currently!)
