With Operation Barbarossa, many Estonians saw the opportunity to break free from the Soviet Union. Arms and equipment were retrieved from hidden caches and the struggle for independence began. A strong force commanded by Major Friedrich Kurg made an ambitious attempt to liberate Tarta, Estonia's second largest city. Unexpectedly it was fellow countrymen, Estonian communists, who stood in their way. . .

Double One 2024. I didn’t interdict the bridge on the first turn which allowed all the Estonians to form a ring of steel around the victory building. Andy defended perfectly and I couldn’t make any headway at all.

Unusual scenario in that the defender moves first, and the obvious strategy is to run away as fast as possible to the victory building. The Russian setup might have been better; as it was I managed to retreat my units largely unhindered and - with a couple of fortunate DRs - got all of them back to building Y7 without taking any losses. It was then just a question of covering all the approaches and rotating my squads to maximise concealment, and the Russians just couldn't get in. A brave last rush across open ground with a commissar and 628 squad was hit with a DR or 3 on IFT2 -3 for a 2KIA, and it was all over. Never even managed the overrun with a TKS that I had been hoping for!

Double One 2024 (Simon and didn't play in the tournament,
and chose to play one another in friendlies).
Another dubious tournament choice. The consensus seems to
be that the Russians have very little chance barring good luck.
Our game was very close. I think this was nothing to do with my
play, but that Simon made a bit of an error, imho, and allowed me
to close a bit too quickly.
I would happily play again as the Russians to see if there's something
that can be done. The consensus _has_ been wrong in the past, after
all.

Ob the smallish side but interesting match up of forces and capabilities. Game turned on a Close Combat Phase around turn 6 when a Soviet 426, not only survived CC but was able to withdraw. Soviets ended up winning with 4 squads to 3 in the victory building.

Scenarios this size always come down to a few lucky rolls - Russians won on the strength of a couple of CC's and a commissar who kept passing MCs on his DC run.

To say I got completely diced is irrelevant as I feel any competent Estonian plan should lead to victory for them. There is nothing but a flimsy LMG with at least one hindrance to stop the Estonians from making for the opposite end of the canal en masse. All they need to do once there is leave a bunch of speedbumps in the Russian path to make pushing east the equivalent of yet another bridge crossing with how narrow the terrain is. The Russian reinforcements will then need to decide whether to enter up the middle to try and assist, or push on alone and try to cross a bridge with tanks pushing up their asses. This scenario was a complete waste of time.

ASLOK 2014: Half my squads were wiped out in a bad bypass and that meant I couldn't deploy correctly to gun up Chris' approach. This ended very quickly. I should try it again as people were raving about it.
