After fighting for several days near Modlin, the 21st Regiment reached Warsaw on 14 September. There they were assigned to defend the Praga District and were reinforced with some local militia. Meanwhile, the Germans had encircled Warsaw from the east, and elements of the I and II Corps began their attacks against Warsaw east of the Vistula River.
