Overview:

During Operation Diadem, the 1st “Free French” Division was given the task to shield the right flank of the French Mountain Corps which was to lead the main attack into the difficult Aurunci Mountains. On 17th May, the French were progressing quickly along the Liri River valley thanks to the retreat of the German troops after the breakthrough around Monte Petrella. Around noon, the leading elements of the BM11 (March Battalion 11), abandoned by the accompanying tanks that were stopped sooner by mines, were stopped by MG fire coming from fortified houses on both sides of the road.

It is an interesting scenario, but it was a frustrating game for the French Foreign Legion.

French failed to blow up the German stone building but secured their half of the map, denying Germans enough VP.
2022-06-25(D) David Ramsey vs Mick Allen German winWon by CVP thanks to some CC capturing shenanigans..
2022-06-25(D) Richard Webb vs Martin Barker Free French winGreat little scenario at Double One. Lots of decisions and interesting terrain for an infantry only scenario. Came up short on VP locations, due to some silly mistakes and Martin's cunning defense and never say die attitude
2022-06-25(D) Simon Staniforth vs Magnus Rimvall German winMy third playing in a couple of months this time at the Double One tourney. We both bid German and my opponent got the balance. He went hard after the initial on board German forces but couldn’t get control of the Fortified J3 building in the early turns. The German reinforcements all came on the west edge and were able to defeat the majority of the 3rd Company troops and pick up the necessary VP for a win in T4. A good challenge for both sides this smallish infantry only scenario
2022-06-25(D) Ian Morris vs Gerard Free French winLost despite outrageous dice luck, rolling at least eight snakes. Got close to the CVP victory, but couldn’t quite seal it.
2022-06-16(A) Simon Staniforth vs Mick Allen German winMy second playing of this scenario I obviously didn’t learn enough from the first one losing this time as the Free French. More seriously a much tighter game the German player was behind on VP T4 so went very aggressive against one of the 2VP buildings which he was able to capture (Snake eyes in CC!) and hold for a narrow in. Again an enjoyable game
2022-05-25(D) Simon Staniforth vs Free French winA good infantry only scenario with choices for both sides to make with each attacking and defending at times. I attacked with the German reinforcements too cautiously and thus fell short of the required VP.
2022-03-28(A) rene cote vs Mrosberg Free French win
2022-03-05(D) Dmitry Klyuykov vs Fedor Melnikov German winDeep raid of German 1st Turn reinforcements allowed to secure rear 2VP buildings and defend them en masse, pincering the French forces from the north and south.
2022-02-16(A) Andy Bagley vs Mike Grogan German winGreat little scenario, really enjoyed it. Things started badly for me as the French when the German sniper caused havoc and my two attempts to place a DC in (fortified) building H5 both resulted in the placing unit being KIA’d! Building P8 then fell on German Turn 3, so I needed to stop the Germans getting one more victory location by the final turn to hold them under 19VPs. For a while this looked possible as they struggled to cross the Q8-V5 road, but my squads behind the hedges around W6 consistently failed their MCs. So in the end I couldn’t stop the Germans claiming W6 in their final APh (and a desperate attempt to recapture P8 failed) to win with exactly 19VPs.
2021-03-07(A) Dmitry Klyuykov vs Fedor Grachev Free French win
2021-02-17(D) Tim Wiegmann vs Mike Grogan German win

(VASL Log)
An excellent and very enjoyable scenario that seems to offer a lot of different strategies for both sides.

My strategy as the Germans centered around building P8. Taking control of this building in turn 2 and then holding on to both it and my three starting buildings until the end would bring me exactly to the 19 VP required to win the scenario. I therefore committed almost all of my reinforcements to a large-scale attack on P8, which I managed to take on schedule despite suffering heavy casualties. This turned the setup of the scenario around, as it would now be the French who had to take away one of my buildings to achieve a win.

With the ball in their court, the French went for an assault against my fortified building in J3. Although I managed to hold it until the end and therefore eek out a win, in hindsight, I assigned too many forces to the attack on P8 from the West and too few to the North to reinforce the defense of my starting buildings. My defenders in J3 were hopelessly outnumbered, and with a bit less fortune on DC attacks or sniper target selection, the building could have easily fallen on turn 5.
2020-10-06(A) davide galloni vs Andrea Manzoli German win
2020-08-02(D) Rick Galli vs Mark Watson German win
2020-04-14(A) Gordon Jupp vs Morris Legge Free French winThe Germans got bogged down as they entered and made little progress towards the 2VP buildings -called it on T4 when it was impossible to reach the required VP. Good scenario tho ;)
2020-04-11(A) manzoli andrea vs Andrea Noia Free French winReally good scenario to improve movement and defensive tactics
German lose for 1 VP
2020-03-29(A) Andrea Noia vs Andrea M German winWon by German by CVP, not victory point. Free french tried to push on the bottom left side of the map but lost an essential squad due to a reckless move. From that moment on, tried to organize a defence focused on the sunken road and on the main VP house on the top of the map. German successfully flanked the French but was able to win only at the last turn by CC. Very complex LOS considerations, very useful scenario to learn them.
2020-03-21(A) Pascal Boileau vs Guillaume Mailhan Free French winMy first PBEM game under the supervision of Guillaume (many thanks to him). German troops were kept away from victory Hexes during enough time. This strategy was costly for the Free French and while they lost many units, the CVP cap was not attained at the end of turn 5.
2019-11-16(A) Marco Pasquini vs Manzoli Andrea Free French winRe Factories 2019 in Reggio Emilia Italy
2019-10-19(D) Richard Jenulis vs Doug Cooley German winWild West Fest (round 2). Fun scenario that provides both side the opportunity to attack and defend while using the entire board to maneuver. Doug's Free French pushed hard against building J3 (which was my fortified building). The building eventually fell, but held out long enough and attrited the French so much, that they could not advance past the gully. My German reinforcements flanked south and hit the sunken road French from behind taking the W6 & V1 VC sites. Squeezed from all sides, and reduced in force, the French surrendered. Good scenario and opponent.

2018-07-19(A) Jeff B vs Magnus Rimvall Free French win3.25 hrsThis is a very interesting scenario as far as the VCs and terrain go, but I think the Germans have an enormously tall order ahead of them. Be sure to read the article in the magazine on Board 55 as there are many nuances to the LOS.

2018-03-01(A) Eric Partizan Eric vs German win
2018-01-18(D) Stephen dedier vs Holt, Jim Free French winVery nice scenario with a lot of options. Jim played an excellent defense as the Germans thwarting my initial plan to seize victory hexes. I brought my reinforcements in through the North hoping to ensure I held the initial 3 buildings and get them on the attack against another victory hex. Conceded in the last German turn when it was clear I was not going to get more than 17VP.
In the end, I don't think I was bold enough in my attack strategy and got bogged down allowing the FF to consolidate which is a fight the attacker has much less chance of winning.
Lots of replay value here and I would definitely play again.
2018-01-18(A) James Holt vs Steve Dedier Free French winI was the defending Free French. I agree with Steve that this is a really neat scenario that was loads of fun. Board 55 offers many LOS and movement challenges in a very time-sensitive scenario. There are a couple of VC options - be sure to very carefully read the description of victory points for buildings - as confirmed to us by the scenario designer, each listed hex is worth points for each turn. Don't get confused by the "and/or" phrasing. E.g., there are five hexes EACH that are worth 1 VP per game turn, and there are an additional two hexes that EACH are worth 2 VP per game turn. The CVP cap makes it interesting as well. This is well worth consideration for tournament play.
2017-12-06(A) Paolo Cariolato vs Federico Corso German winThis is a litte scenario, but it's subtle in many ways. It's all about manouver for the attacker but also for the defender. Defending the key buildings is important but not enough.
I was having the upper hand on the building side, but at the hand I lost for CVP cap.
Great scenario, the more I play from Mr. Colin the more I like his style. Well done Lionel.
