The port of Murmansk was an inviting target for the Germans, but the lack of roads, terrain, and logistical difficulties precluded any major campaign at its capture. Despite these obstacles, the Germans attempted to isolate Murmansk from the rest of the Soviet Union by attacking across the border from northern Finland. The Russians put up a spirited delaying action, slowing down the German assault. The action of the 29th was typical of these early battles. The Germans advanced through heavy vegetation fighting against a hidden enemy that would fight and then skulk away in the night.
