Overview:

An encircling force, the Chinese 114th Regiment with the 6th Field Artillery Battery, was sent circling south to cross the River Tanai at Kantau. The Chinese regiment collided with the Japanese in a series of sharp actions along two small creeks. The jungle made it difficult for the Chinese to organize and coordinate their attacks; the supporting 6th Battery could not even take part until fields of fire were cut. But as this arduous task was underway, infiltrating parties of the Japanese 55th Infantry Regiment surrounded the battery. The 3/114th, charged with supporting the guns, was split into four fragments, no two of them in contact. The Chinese gunners were forced to fight to save their guns, and themselves, alone.

2025-04-06(A) Jon Jaramillo vs Brett Snyder Japanese win5 hrsIn my second foray into PTO, we chose this classic. Brett's Americans were loaded for bear and my defenses quickly were eaten away by the American FP and leadership. I got somewhat lucky when I was able to kill a Stewart with a THH and then another one was lost to recall when he broke the MA. The turning point was the best Japanese leader getting a hold of the flamethrower and being in a trench adjacent to the main pillbox and another pillbox. Every American advance was met with a 24FP blast that completely broke up the American assault on the main location. The flamethrower finally ran out of fuel near the end of the game, but by that time both sides were down to just a handful of troops. The Americans couldn't muster quite enough offense and were probably just a turn behind. A very bloody battle that could have gone either way.
2025-01-26(A) Jon Jaramillo vs Brett Snyder Chinese win4 hrsMy first foray into PTO. I set up very heavy on the west edge and tried to bum rush the Chinese with limited success. I lost a lot of units early not completely understanding the terrains benefits or the strength of the Japanese. I started to make decent progress in the middle turns, executing a couple nice Banzai charges that let me get one gun captured and spiked and breaking the crew of the second gun, but in the end I just ran out of time and manpower and Brett pulled his last hip stack out concealed to protect the last gun. I never even made it into the hex with the last gun, the Chinese created a little roadblock of bodies in front of it and the game ended when I failed to get any results in my last AFPh. Good game, I definitely learned a lot for one scenario and Brett is excellent at the rules for PTO.

2022-09-23(A) Jim Bishop vs Mark Thompson Japanese winOne of Mark's first games in PTO. Banzai! and DC heroes galore.
2022-09-23(D) Mark Thompson vs Japanese (Spara) Japanese winThe Chinese had a decent set-up but made the critical error of taking Prep Fire across the first line in the first turn instead of falling back and maintaining concealment. The Chinese did manage to eliminate 2 of 3 Japanese leaders in an attempt to forestall Banzai charges, but DC Heroes abounded and remaining Japanese leader lead devastating Banzai charges to overwhelm the Chinese defenses and take all three guns.
2021-05-31(D) Jason Nichols vs Eric Topp Japanese winJapanese are hard to stop and Chinese squads stay broken too long. Good game to play to see the way the Japanese employ banzai. Guns are next to useless.
2020-10-23(D) Scott Fischbein vs Will Thatcher Japanese winWill used his Banzai charges and DC heroes to full effectiveness... especially in turn 3 while conducting a Banzai charge with almost all of his available units (~8 squads/2 leaders) and creating a DC Hero mid-charge to wipe out 4 units who were inadvertently overstacked in a juicy target hex. During the charge, despite facing multiple 6-12 FP shots and lots of residual, he passed almost all his MCs and striped only one unit... the Chinese did not fair so well and resigned in shame after losing almost their entire force.
2020-09-05(D) Eric Topp vs Kalle Widell Chinese winThe Japanese launched a Banzai attack on turn 4 but took heavy losses. Poor rally rolls by Japanese were then followed by devastating Chinese Prep Fire. With only three unbroken squads to take the Chinese Guns, the Japanese conceded.
2020-08-12(A) Rob MacGinley vs Jean-Yves Tessier Chinese winMade the push up the middle approach and some really low rolls decimated the IJA and with reduced numbers they failed to get the 2nd and 3rd gun

2020-05-09(A) Jacob Elmqvist vs Ingemar Gardell Japanese win
2020-04-12(D) Andy Beaton vs Jonathon Kay Chinese winLike all excellent scenarios, came down to the last CC phase - the fight I should have won and lost, and the fight I should have lost but rolled a 3 and left an unclaimed gun with a pile of corpses around it. It's reputation as a classic is deserved.

2017-06-24(A) X von Marwitz vs Paul Treslove Japanese winThis scenario is rightly counted among the classics. A LOT of fun to play! I had the Japanese in this one. I have not played a game in a long time, where both sides consistenly rolled such crap. We both had all sorts of awkward and catastrophic things happening all the time which made each of us think that everything was lost only to rejoice with new hope as comparable shit happened to the opponent. Just to give an idea for the Japanese: MC average of 7.96 in 29 rolls, IFT average of 7.72 in 29 rolls, 228 crew dead before first shot was fired, MMG X'ed on first shot by non-qualified infantry, 10-0 rolles Fate and Lethal wound, 1st DC Hero rolls Fate&Lethal Wound, 2nd DC hero Wounds to Pin short of target, just 1 squad equivalent died due to MC Failure, the rest were all KIA'ed, K/ed, or Fate took them. Similar stuff for the Chinese. It took a lot of considerate Banzai Charges to bring this one home. Highly recommended.
2017-03-18(A) Kermit Mullins vs Francis Biss Chinese winThis was my 3rd Round Scenario for the 2017 Kansas City ASL Group March Madness Tournament. Francis Biss set up a good in my grill defense which initially folded as my Japanese Banzai charged them. But I suffered losses in the process and by game end could only reach one gun as the Chinese swarmed me in the jungle. This is a good scenario...but I didn't find it as enjoyable as others I played during the tournament.

2016-04-20(A) Bill Brodie vs Dan Japanese winPlayed this as the Japanese again. Used their special abilities to their best, encircling the Chinese and breaking most of them. The Chinese did not get a chance to rally, and conceded on turn 5.
