Overview:

With the fall of Rethem and Westen, additional crossings were to be expected. Kapitan zur See Neitzel's Marine Grenadier Regiment 7 had been ordered that 'any enemy crossing of the river was to be attacked and destroyed'. Opposite Westen, the troops of the Hungarian artillery training unit, Ungarisch Artillerie Ausbildungs Bataillon 7, were in position after their withdrawal from the fighting on the left bank the previous day. The dubious combat abilities of the Hungarians require that Neitzel reinforce them as soon as possible. Neitzel formed several kampfgruppe to respond to the expected British attack. They were ordered to reinforce the thin line of units overwatching the river. Unfortunately, the British reaction came first.
