Overview:

On the northern shoulder of the Kursk salient, General Model's Ninth Army had spent weeks preparing for its role in Operation Zitadelle, the German plan to cut off the Kursk bulge and destroy the Soviet units caught in the resulting pocket. The assault forces included the new Ferdinand tank destroyers, in this case used as heavy assault guns due to their almost invulnerable armor. They were to be used in conjunction with the radio-controlled Fkl B IVs of Panzer Kompanie (Funklenk) 313. These tiny demolition vehicles would breach holes in the minefields through which the assault troops would move. The first day's goal for Sturm Division 78 and Infanterie Division 216 was a crossroads near the town of Maloarkhangelsk, control of which would protect the flank of the German attack towards Kursk.
