Overview:

Fearing for his left flank, the boundary with the British, General Gerow had kept his V Corps advance on a tight rein. But the success of the British BLUECOAT offensive and weakening German resistance persuaded him to change his policy to an all-out charge forward. The corps was to “drive strong and hard”. His commanders were to “bypass everything. . .let’s get down and take a bath in the Vire.” In his enthusiasm, Gerow personally ordered one of 5th Division’s regimental commanders to mount his infantry on tanks and rush them forward. But the way ahead was not easy. The low hills were covered with thick bocage, and the rearguard groups covering the withdrawal of Meindl’s Fallschirmjager Korps were adept at striking from ambush, then slipping away.

2025-07-27(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM American winI drew the German rear guard in this Normandy breakout clash. I set up to deny Jim 55I4 as long as possible, but sunken road intersection 55V5 is the real key. I knocked out two M3s there before Jim's tanks reached my SPW 250/10 and knocked it out. One more wreck in that hex would have won the game! It was super close: Jim had 41 VP to my 28 VP (6 exit VP and 22 CVP). I don't think you can just defend 55V5 though, because the whole US force will drive off 55R0 and 55R10 for the win. Jim: This is a fun but frustrating 'Sunday drive' through Normandy! The GI juggernaut will break through but you can't get too aggressive. Read the VC carefully; the US does NOT get CVP (the 22 CVP I earned meant nothing), so you need to exit HTs and infantry. Getting 7 of 9 tanks off the south edge is very unlikely, so sacrifice a few to free up the Halftracks. Their 20-movement factor will get them off once the German defense collapses.
2019-04-26(D) Kermit Mullins vs Scott Waites German winRough game for the Americans. By turn 4, my Germans had destroyed every vehicle except for 2 Shermans. The 9-1, 8-1 and 5 x 6-6-6's were also KIA'd. So my opponent conceded at the end of 4.
