Overview:

Kwajalein Island contained the most Japanese forces, but was not the most built up in terms of defenses. The defenses were built to eliminate an attacker on the beach, and priority was given to the ocean side over the lagoon side. The Japanese did not know “alligator” tanks would allow the Americans to launch a mass amphibious operation on the lagoon side. The 184th Regimental Combat Team landed at 0930 and received relatively light fire. The 3rd Platoon, C Company, 13th Engineer Battalion was attached to the 3rd Battalion and advanced with the infantry. Several hundred meters inland they ran into bunkered strongpoints, where the Japanese put up a stiff resistance.

2019-03-09(A) Jeff B vs Will Willow Japanese winI attacked aggressively across the whole board width. By the end of Turn 1 the initial line of Japanese defense was either proven to be dummies or eliminated. I also drew the AA gun's fire, which had multiple hits upon my thin-skinned AFVs but no kills. It would fall by the end of my next turn, and I would already be halfway across the board with only a squad and an LVT lost. It was starting to look like an easy victory. I left no stone unturned in my approach, methodically clearing every possible HIP hex in my path. It became more and more apparent however that all the PBs would be at the far side of the board and, when the first one popped up to shoot its HMG at me from T4 it all but confirmed it. I still had both Alligators and two LVTs though so I was feeling good. By the end of Turn 3 though the sweat was starting to appear. I lost another LVT, and Alligator, and the other one ran out of fuel for the FT. Considering two of the three PBs were in bamboo things were looking a bit trickier. But I was 3/4 of the way across the board and still felt I had ample time. I had an important stack (2 BAZ and a DC) straggling a bit busy clearing up some backside resistance and a pesky ATR crew. This may have proved to be the difference-maker, along with the panjis I stumbled upon en route to the PBs. In the end I was one turn short, needing to get and win an ambush or infiltration to take the last PB. Great scenario and game!
