Overview:
As the Germans relentlessly pushed deeper into Belgium, they hit the British defenses at the Escaut River. They suffered sever casualties forcing a crossing, and establishing a bridgehead near Esquelmes on Poplar Ridge. The small bridgehead was heavily shelled, and then attacked in successive waves by two British infantry companies. Still, the Germans held firm to the important ridge.
