Overview:

Airborne troops had broken the German resistance at Carentan during the fighting on the 10th and 11th for the causeway into the city. Another attack on June 12th met only rearguard resistance, and Carentan was finally captured. The 506th advanced southwest of the city and dug in for the night. The next morning, Colonel Sink had the regiment attack westward, and to the surprise of the troops they met counterattacking armor and infantry elements of SS Panzergrenadier-Division 17 supporting their old nemesis, Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6.
Attacker: German (SS) (SS Panzergrenadier-Division 17, Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6)

2025-06-01(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German (SS) winWe kicked off our Normandy June with this one, and I drew the Germans. I hit the US right, going for trail breaks. I overwhelmed Jim's platoon there quickly then raced for the north edge. It was low SMOKE DRs not brilliant tactics that won it. Jim: I thought two 337s with BAZ44s could handle AFVs pushing through the 54A4 woods, so I put the 57L in orchard 63U5 expecting Vic to send his AFVs to the R3-Y10 road. Both guesses were wrong, so I had to push the gun into U4, and run MMCs across a road covered by a StuG parked in 54I5. My 747s broke more than expected but this one still came down to one missed AP shot at the Marder that would have put Vic over the CVP cap. Good game! (This card shows a U.S. M1 ATG outside Carentan, nice job MMP!)
2025-02-20(D) Dave Mareske vs Craig Renier American win
2025-01-17(A) Mark Thompson vs Steve Lampon (American) German (SS) winMarder and 2 StuG successfully exploited trail-break on American right flank by German Turn 2 (accompanied by 6-5-8s/swarm of 3-4-8 HS) and LMG-toting 5-4-8s and StuH moved up middle to interdict re-positioning enemy forces. By German Turn 3, DC-toting 7-0 eliminated 57AT which sealed the game. Tough one for Americans IMHO if German tanks avoid BoGs and screen exit run with MA and SD SMOKE.
2025-01-17(A) Peter Palmer vs Herbert Heyman German (SS) winFirst FNF game for me. It was time tight, I'd played it before but couldn't remember how it went. The ATG has about three real setup locations of any worth, so it's not that hard to figure out the timing. In the end I broke through on Herbert's right flank and secured the win on the last movement phase. This may be the Tie-breaker game for Close Assault later in the year.
2024-05-23(A) Eric Partizan Eric vs American win
2023-07-07(D) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best American winAmerican dice were very hot and German dice were stone cold with four boxcars and each caused casualty reduction. Bazookas took out the Marder and 105 STUG. The CVP cap was reached on Turn 2 with another German boxcars and that was game.
2023-07-07(A) Dan Best vs Kermit Mullins American win
2023-05-15(D) Paul Works vs Steve Slunt American win
2022-11-26(A) Mark Thompson vs Commissar Piotr (Americans) American winMarder and 2 StuG successfully exploited trail-break on American right flank by Turn 2 (accompanied by 6-5-8s) and LMG-toting 5-4-8s moved up middle to interdict re-positioning enemy forces, but without requisite aggression. This (and use of slow Armored Assault across OG in lieu of vehicle-only dash) allowed Americans to shift to right flank, defend in depth, and successfully Manhandle 57 AT Gun into better firing position to interdict exit. Germans conceded on Turn 4 with Marder knocked out and one StuG malf'ing MA. In addition to lack of aggression in attack, German's newb error in focusing 6-5-8s on exit rather than engaging/destroying American interdicting forces left this winnable game (in Turn 2) out of reach 2 turns later. Thanks Peter for patient instruction.
2022-05-04(D) nathan wegener vs James Treu American winGermans flooded the woods. Bogged 2 Stugs... they got loose but cleared the bocage line where the ATG picked off the Marder and a Stug. 3rd Stug Immob and game over. This scenario seemed to be too dependent on a few rolls.
2021-06-26(D) Ian Morris vs Martin Mayers German (SS) winConceded on turn 3 when the Gun crew broke. Without the Gun, the Americans cannot win.
2020-03-01(A) patrick palma vs John Garlic German (SS) win
2020-03-01(D) John Garlic vs Patrick Palma German (SS) win[Imported from ROAR]
2019-06-09(A) Jonathan Kapleau vs Tyler, Randy German (SS) win
2019-04-27(D) Andy Goldin vs David Ready German (SS) winMy Americans managed to hold off the attacking Germans for a few turns until casualties began to mount. David's Germans then got a penetration on the American right flank by moving through the woods and successfully made for the exit. Highlights -- or lowlights -- were my 8-1 going berserk and convincing his squad to charge a nearby Stug and accompanying infantry. As you can imagine, that didn't end well. Oh, and then there's my AT gun which fired at an approaching Stug, missed, then intensive fired and... malf'd the gun. They didn't get a chance to repair it, since the Stug got a "K" result on it's overrun. I had a few 'snake eyes" but didn't have the good dice when I needed them. David played aggressively, took chances, and won. Depending on where the defender sets up the ATG, a German attack on the woods using the Marder to make a trail break seems to be the way to go.
2019-04-15(D) Steven Cummings vs Larry Flaherty German (SS) win
2019-01-19(D) Michael Focht vs James Thompson American win
2018-11-04(D) Allen Evenson vs Bill Slunt German (SS) winWest Coast Rumble Round 4: I setup my defense mostly in the middle thinking it was tough for the AFVs to go through the woods. Bill masked his forces on that side and I had to shift over. Th AT gun did take out one AFV but it the other 3 were able to sprint off after breaking gun crew by turn 4. I then had to try to get 13 more CVP in the two turns so attacked remaining German infantry. It Didn't happen.
2018-08-12(A) Stephen dedier vs Johnston, Mike German (SS) winMike and I are continuing our e-mail run through all of the WO scenarios and I am learning a lot from him.
My Germans pressed with the thought of 2 vehicles each on the left and right flank with the bulk of the infantry pushing up the middle shaded right. I hoped to split his Bazooka's and force the AT gun to contend with an all out run of 4 AFV's off the board from both flanks.
His stout defense in the middle forced me to the right with 80% of my infantry and a 3rd AFV to assist. The Marder successfully trailbroke the woods but was held at bay by a concealed Baz (broken early but rallied quickly.
This developed into a fight for the woods where the Germans were fortunate enough to get a DC on the American Baz team and did a good amount of destruction. The Paras mowed down any infantry that tried to cross into the town and escape so they would up supporting the sprint of the Stg's.
Without the Baz support, all three Stg's were able to make a break past the cathedral and get off the board with only a couple of low probability shots from the AT gun in the orchard center.

The Marder made a break for it and luckily was missed by the Baz holding him hostage and also exited the board.

One or 2 die rolls the other way and this scenario might have been very different. Lots of fun, looking forward to WO4

2016-01-31(D) Russell Dewhurst vs Bob E American win
2015-08-25(A) David Yllanes vs Jean-François Fortin German (SS) winI had the attacking German force and decided to go all out on my left flank, to get my tanks through the woods. I kept my StuH and two 548 with LMGs in the central part of the map to put a little pressure on the defender's movement. I was very lucky that the wind increased in the first round, multiplying the effect of my smoke and Jeff was not very lucky with his MCs (although a brave half-squad kept three of my 648 occupied in CC for several turns and killed one). In the end, my attack on the woods was successful and I was lucky to survive the fire of his AT gun (it did get one hit against my StuG, but it bounced). On intensive fire the gun malfunctioned and the response fire by my Marder broke the crew. At this point, Jeff called the game, since he had nothing to stop my exiting the AFVs.

A recommended short scenario.
2014-11-22(D) Simon Staniforth vs American win
2014-05-18(D) Davide Bendazzi vs Sandro Coriasco American winWon at last turn - very close game - took out one Stug after three shots and immobilized the StuH42 with the gun - my opponent missed just one exit VP
2014-04-22(A) patrick palma vs David Hassler German (SS) win
2014-01-19(D) Michael Rodgers vs Stehpen Frum German (SS) winThe American player needs his "A" game because he does not have a lot of resources to fight the German onslaught. Some luck with the ATG helps too.
2013-10-16(A) Doba Serge vs American win
2013-09-13(D) Chris Brackney vs Kermit Mullins American win
2013-09-07(A) Kermit Mullins vs Christopher Brackney American win3-1/2 turns into what is becoming a very good and close contest. Looking forward to great finish.
Great finish with the final turn deciding the game. Germans exited 15 CVP, but a lone US 7-4-7 saved the day and kept the last CVP from making it.
2013-06-13(D) X von Marwitz vs David Wallace German (SS) winMy opponent did exactly what I anticipated by trying the TB approach. My idea was to speedbump him while approaching the B4 woods (which cost me two HS for no gain) first. Then I would fall back quickly as I think the US has not much to gain on the German left because there is no terrain to fall back to. But a fighting withdrawal is called for here for the GIs. I wanted to defend in the Stone buildings against the Germans in woods to alleviate for my lower morale. The extraction worked partly as planned, giving me a good opportunity for a FL vs both flanks. Unfortunately, instead of rallying, my 9-1 rolled 6,6+6 to drop dead by stroke in turn 2. After not being able to hit a German vehicle with 3 ATG shots, my Gun&Crew was disposed of by a Direct Hit in turn 3. I conceded because I could not have done anything to prevent the German AFV from rolling off the board.
This scenario can be nice, at the same time it could not be. If the German attempts the TB approach, much depends on him not getting stuck (which is not that likely). And I think the US cannot prevent the sucess of the TB approach unless comitting too many forces against it which would leave himself exposed elsewhere. If the TB works, then the AFVs can be relatively safe until they have to cross Open Ground. Taking some time to place Smoke might be a good idea before trying to race across. At the same time, much depends on the US gun. It could easily take out 2 AFVs, but then it could not.
I guess I have not yet found the perfect US recipe for this one at this point...
2012-10-14(A) Fred Ingram vs Jeff Coleman American winI missed the part on the scenario card where the gun had to set up on board 63. So I wasted a turn or 2 of vehicle movement being cagey through the bocage. That definitely cost me the game as I only got 12 points off (STUGIIIG and Stug42H but no infantry). Jeff played a great game of planned withdrawals and had his bazookas in great positions at the end. Luckily I was able to tie one up in CC or I might not have been able to get 2 vehicles off.
2012-10-14(D) Jeff Coleman vs Fred Ingram American win
2012-07-25(D) Andy Beaton vs Martí Cabré German (SS) winI had Martí's tanks good and bottled up with a well-placed AT gun, but I couldn't stop the infantry from taking a mess of prisoners and getting off the board. A very tense game.
2012-07-25(A) Martí Cabré vs Andy Beaton German (SS) winDuplicate.

At first I thought I had a weak spot on Andy's defense and broke through his right. But then his AT gun burst a tank in flames and I had to hide my vehicles.

I tried to reach his gun using infantry, but the bocage slows the attacks so much that I realized I couldn't make it and then changed plans to charge the open field with the infantry and all the Ami prisoners, enough Exit VP to grab the win.

2011-08-17(A) Paolo Cariolato vs Arlecchino79 German (SS) winInteresting but demanding scenario. The defender needs a master plan, while the attacker is bound to a strict schedule.
2011-08-17(A) Paolo Cariolato vs Arlecchino79 German (SS) winThe German won after poor american set-up resulted in a rolled up defence ina single turn.
