At dawn on March 23, 1939 Hungary suddenly attacked Slovakia from Carpatho-Ukraine with instructions being to "proceed as far to the west as possible". Hungary attacked Slovakia without any declaration of war, catching the Slovak army unprepared, because many Slovak soldiers were in transit from the Czech region and had not reached their Slovak units yet. Despite the awful confusion caused by the hurried mobilization and desperate shortage of officers, the Slovak force in Michalovce had coalesced sufficiently to attempt a counterattack by the following day. This was largely due to Czech Major Kubíček, who had taken over command from Haššik and begun to get a better grip on the situation. Because they were based on a widely available civilian truck, spares were soon found to repair five of the sabotaged OA vz.30 armoured cars in Prešov, and they reached Michalovce at 5:30 am on March 24. Their Czech crews had been replaced by scratch teams of Slovak signallers from other technical armed forces. They were immediately sent on a reconnaissance mission to Budkovce, some 15 km south of Michalovce, but could not find any trace of the Hungarians.
It was decided to counterattack eastwards where the most advanced Hungarian outpost was known to be some 10 km away at Závadka. The road-bound armoured cars engaged the Hungarian pocket from the front whilst Slovak infantry worked round their flanks. Soon they forced the heavily outnumbered Hungarians to fall back from Závadka towards their main line on the River Okna/Akna, just in front of Nižná Rybnica.

A win due to a forfeit, the Slovakians had made a solid push on the right flank and down the center. A few great shots coupled with boresight made advancing down the center a headache, but constant pressure and a lucky CC or two created possibilities to get into the village and start assaulting the victory hexes. Hungarians definitely have the advantage on this one!

Hungarian guns wreaked havoc on the armour - the AA gun destroyed 3 in one ROF tear. One of my HS prisoners attacked its guard and won (created 8-1) then attacked the AA crew in CC and created another 8-0. In the end only the AT crew survived (but in melee) with 13/15 buildings in Slovak hands.

This was over by turn 3 lots of broken hungarian MG, hot Slov dice vs cold hungarian dice and I forgot the Arty on turn 1. Tom's armor was king the each AT gun accounted for one, an MMG stuned an AC forcing recall but then it stalled on its start up die cut rout paths! Over all a disaster for the Hungarians.

Game went down to last CC phase (again!) but held out to deny the Slovaks enough buildings, fun game, all the AFV'S were taken out, my FB boxcar ed first strafing attempt and one of my MMG managed to malf on no less than 3 occasions!

Lost 4 AFV's to Hungarian AT guns and 1 to a breakdown - pushed the game to a final CC for my 11th building and failed to win. A couple of sloppy mistakes bringing up the conscripts may have cost me the game. Still fun - I love minor powers, tin cans and popguns.

Another interesting game - I pushed on hard with the Slovaks early on but got caught but some good OBA and a wonder gun of a 20L AA which broke and pinned down a 8-1 leader and stack (I shouldn't have moved it in the open tho!) Then I forgot to use my FB and didn't use my tanks to best effect :( Still, was still in there at the end with a chance to take building 11 on the last CC but didn't quite make it. A good game which I would play again, lots of variety and possibilities.

There's a lot of open ground to cross in this one, but the Slovakians have enough troops to do it given a little luck. This I had in our playing, I threw all the vehicles down the road to avoid the Mud penalties and paid for it by losing an AC to the AT Gun, though the crew of this was soon taken out by my HMG which fortuitously was in the right location to do this. The Hungarian Oerlikon played little part as it broke on its first shot and never recovered. Neither side's air support appeared until the last possible moment and I almost threw it away by forgetting to tie the HUngarian aircraft down in a dogfight on the last turn. As it turns out I was able to snag victory by seizing enough buildings.

Jeff & I picked this one just because it was a little off the beaten path as to time period as well as force allocations. However, we played it on VASL and the colors are not quite so easy to tell apart there compared to using real components.
Anyway, the scenario itself played poorly, not because of my wonderful setup (a thing the behold - LOL), but it was just darn tough for the Slovaks to get anywhere on the first few turns slogging through the open. I got 2 harassing fire OBA missions in before the concession.
It sure did not seem fun to attack, and the defense was nothing to draw me back to this one either. Maybe we both played it wrong (at least I goat a win)
