Overview:

The US 90th Infantry Division had had a rough time so far in Normandy. Since 8 July, its 358th Regiment had been trying to crack the Mahlman Line, the main line of defense across the base of the Cotentin peninsula. Hill 122, the key position in the line, was covered with dense overgrowth and tangled brush that limited visibility. The summit had been taken, but the German defenders had not conceded the hill, and were defending the reverse slope. A tank platoon of the 712th Tank Battalion arrived at a critical time to offer assistance. Company K, which had been in reserve, was brought up to pass through the forward positions with the tanks, and break out into the open fields past the Lastelle Road.
Attacker: American (Company K, 3rd Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division and Company C, 712th Tank Battalion)
Defender: German (Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 15, Fallschirmjäger-Division 5)

2021-10-20(A) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best German winMy Americans lost two tanks to a 50L AT Gun and MALF'd and Recalled a third. My boys ELR'd constantly and couldn't get good hits on the Germans. Managed to take two buildings but called at the end of 4 as my force was too depleted to carry on the attack.
2021-10-20(D) Dan Best vs Kermit Mullins German win
2020-09-26(D) Tripp Killin vs Phil Watkins American winAmerican's charged down the hill, scattering the German pickets without much loss. The line at the road held pretty well, and the Germans fell back in good order, deflected an aggressive push on the right and held the bocage line of the orchard on the right.
In the center the American 9-1 MMG kill stack maneuvered into 6K2 as the American's attempted to pull together an attack against the skulking Fallschirmjaegers.
American's malf'd two sherman MA's, but even their MGs were effective. The Germans didn't hit with a single PF, and pinned 5 times looking for them. This, combined with the need to spread out in face of incredible American firepower meant we weren't doing much damage.
Phil managed his American's well, realizing he had time, keeping them in Good Order and good position (despite some horrid IFT rolls) until that the DFPh and PFPh combo on turns 4 and 5. Then the IFT loved him and the German center collapsed. As he rushed through into the orchard with only a squad and a gunless crew to defend the last building, we called it.
If the Germans were lucky, they might have shifted some forces to defend, used their morale advantage, but I hadn't killed enough Americans, especially tanks, to make it likely.
Good scenario. As with most small scenarios, it can feel a little dicey, but the combination of the hill terrain, road to cross, and then bocage, it is an exciting scenario to play and always feels like it's presenting new problems.
2020-08-24(A) Martí Cabré vs Ramon Sarobe American winFallschirmjaeger stood the first turn without losses and I moved the American units adjacent to them. Next turn was devastating for both sides with many brokies but the Americans managed to take the first positions down the valley. Shermans pounded the defenders and even managed to overrun a unit but then a panzerfaust and a CH from an AT gun stopped them from advancing further. Americans held 3 of 5 buildings and had two more at reach with only 1.5 German squads defending them with the rest of the defenders stuck on the other side of the board and with three turns remanining we called it an American victory.
