Operation NORDWIND, the German offensive in France’s Alsace province, enjoyed only limited success in its first week. German fortunes changed, however, with the penetration by Panzer-Korps XXXIX of the American Maginot Line positions during a pre-dawn attack. This assault shattered Companies A and B of the 242nd Regiment and left Companies C and D, deployed in Hatten itself, as the last remaining infantry units opposing the panzers. Both sides conducted early morning probes, during which it became clear the Germans enjoyed local superiority. By mid-day, the full force of Kampfgruppe Huss, Panzergrenadier-Division 25, had concentrated to launch against the defenders of Hatten.

An exciting scenario. Actually we only finished Turn 3 in our weekly f2f play. My armor assault with a Panther on right wing orchards was hit hard by hellcat and some infantry, giving all 3 hellcats a chance to perform a dance of death to knock out all my panthers.
In the center and left wing, my infantry battalion pushed hard and eliminated the majority of GIs, because they deployed a forward defense line. I should have concentrated all my force here. Hand to hand CC was so bloody, resulting in either "kill'em all" or "be killed by them all" lol, 2 of 248 and a 447 failed to HtH kill 2 US 666 squads by ambush, were easily wiped out by them :(
I still held 3 Sdkfz 251 and 3 squads in my hand, while Gregory still had 3 hellcats and a hidden 57L. With 3.5 turns to go, it definitely would be interesting to finish the game.

Germans quickly eliminated west half of the defenders looking like an easy walk-over. But steady stream of low dice rolls from me slowly ground down the opponent's resolve.

I gave up the forward defense except for a unit in the church spire to strip Germans.
Gene was a bit cautious and i had a good turn knocking back his attempts to cross the well defended road. One Panther malfed which helped. I managed to take out 2 HT with M18s and killed one of the AA HT with the mortar. Americans managed to hold concealment and shoot well.

Slow loosing Americans pull out a stunner two killer rolls in a row to shock the German player and get a win. Bertoldo got his pound of Panther flesh in this one...Enjoy the scenario would play again.

Kept the Panthers well covered by infantry and ground forward on the poorly guarded right flank. Lost my AA halftracks but took all locations, killed all M18s and lost no Panthers. I'm not sure how I would defend as Americans.

Aaron and I played a friendly game at Winter Offensive. This scenario is tough on the defender. Aaron is still learning how to use vehicles but gave me a run for my money, so to speak. The American player has to protect his backfield from marauding halftracks or face being surrounded and destroyed. Fun game.

Fun VASL game with some back and forth. Martin is such a gentleman and enjoyable opponent. In the end an American squad managed to get the last Panther with a BAZ shot in the side! Alas another scenario where the hero being commemorated does comparatively little while in my inexpert hands. My apologies to their legacies! :-)

A strong attack down the north flank, with very little action south of Rue Principia. Quickly overran the American outpost line (mostly dummies), and pushed forward to the school.
After taking the hexrow 'D' objectives, turned south towards "The Fort," running a platoon of infantry in SPW 251/1s down Rue de Russeau in an end run. The two survivors of this venture (one halftrack got picked off by a Hellcat) dropped off their passengers near the woods, where they took control of buildings on the north side of Rue Principia.
With Germans holding 9 victory locations, with both Panthers active, and looking to lose the last Hellcat, American conceded at end of turn 6.

The Germans entered fast and closed ranks quickly, as the Americans chose not to contest them and hold on to concealment. Turn 2 my aggressive/risky AT gun paid for itself by flaming a Panther with a side shot. A sniper recalled one of the Hanomags as well. I would've been happy with just that, but the bottom of the turn my gunners bagged a loaded HT to add to the steel carnage. The crew proved to be scrappy, breaking the German infantry that tried to close ranks. They ended up surviving until the last turn, when they died in CC. Turn 3 was again costly for the Germans as they lost 3 squads. Two trying to cross the road to storm the first line of defense, and one unloading in the face of a point blank shot, which managed to stun the HT as well. It was a sitting duck for one of my TDs to move into position to blast it to bits the next turn. Turn four the Germans suffered another blow when a failed overrun by the last Panther left them exposed to a lucky rear shot from the gun. They were down to one Hanomag, and this had trouble keeping its gun in working order. Without armor support, the infantry never even cracked the first line of defense until the very last turn, and even then just barely. They only ended with 4/10 building hexes needed. All this without me having to even show my HMG or heavy mortar.

I attacked strongly on the left with a supporting effort on the right. I held the two halftracks with two squads in reserve. After breaking through on the left I sent the halftrack mounted squads around behind the enemy defenses, supported by a Panther. This caused the US problems that resulted in their resignation.

Unusual and intriguing setup options for both sides, really fun game this, my ATG got a CH on one of the German Panthers and Nick was a bit too deliberate in his attack buildup which meant he couldn't get to enough VC hexes at the end. Would definitely play again!
