Overview:
The Polish Second Army, under General Swierczewski, took part in the Soviet drive on Berlin. By 19 April the 8th Infantry Division and 1st Armored Corps had pushed back the Germans in the south, while four infantry divisions moved towards Dresden, gaining bridgeheads on the River Spree north of Bautzen. Swierczewski then decided to prioritize the taking of Dresden over securing his southern flank. Meanwhile, Field Marshal Schörner, commanding Army Group Center, planned to launch a counteroffensive with all available forces at the flank of the Polish Army. His aim was to break through to the trapped 9th Army - and possibly delay the Soviets long enough for Berlin to surrender to the Western Allies. Army Group Center urgently needed to find intact bridges over the Spree to unleash the panzers against the exposed flank of the Poles.
