Overview:
The 21st Tank Brigade was formed in September 1941 in Vladimir in the Moscow District with one company of KV-1’s, one of T-34/57’s, one of T-34/76’s and four of T-26’s, for a total of 87 tanks. The Brigade was sent to Kalinin as the Germans managed to take the city on 14 October. 21st Tank Brigade and 20th Reserve Rifle Regiment assaulted the German 36th Motorized Division supported by tanks of the 1st Panzer Division. The Brigade almost made contact with 252nd Rifle Division of 29th Army on the other side of the city but a counterattack from the German 161st Division twarted this attempt. After losing a lot of vehicles the brigade was withdrawn from the frontline on 2 November but would be assaulted again before it could regroup.Attacker: Friendly (Russian 21st Tank Brigade and 20th Reserve Rifle Regiment)
