Overview:
As January 1945 opened, the 3rd SS Panzer Regiment, Totenkopf Division found itself driving into Hungary as part of the initial relief attempt of Budapest. Leading a column of tanks and half-tracks, was Ostubaf. Anton Laackmann's armored Kampfgruppe. Totenkopf had encountered strong Soviet forces between Dumaalmás and Neszmély. This would compel Laackmann to deploy his grenadiers and fight his way through the Soviet defenses. The time was 0500, and it was still dark as artillery was called in and the first tanks pushed forward. After a couple of the tanks were knocked-out, Panther 101 would take the lead. Stubaf. Meierdress was in command of that Panther. Meierdress would call a halt, jump out and confer with the other Panzer Leaders before renewing the attack. As the sun came up, Meierdress re-entered Panther 101, just as a shot from a hidden SU-85 penetrated the turret.Attacker: German (SS) (Kampfgruppe Laackmann, 3rd SS Panzer Regiment)
