Overview:
Fearing an enemy counterattack while vulnerable and lacking anti-tank assets, General Thomas imparted to his commanders the need to extinguish enemy resistance on the north bank. His other brigades attempted to deceive the enemy with artillery fire up and down the river, with fake crossings further west, with the hope of confusing them enough to prevent them from committing reserves at Vernon.
