Overview:
The 3rd Battalion, 127th Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division was ordered to take Hill 400. This hill was the key defensive position of the crack Japanese Imperial 1st Division. The commanding ground of Hill 400 enabled the Japanese not only to defend the hill proper, but extensive areas on its flank as well. The 3rd Battalion attacked on November 30th with supporting 81mm, 60mm mortar and machine gun fire. For 8 days a vicious battle raged. Numerous "Banzai" counter attacks halted and reversed gains. On December 7th, the final assault was ready. Two hundred yards of barren ground was bravely crossed by the Americans.
