Overview:
The rail lines continued to be a primary target for partisan activity. The number of raids they made on them was not great, and taken in total never represented a really serious effort. During February they blew tracks in 24 places in the rear of the Sixteenth Army and in the central sector broke rails in 94 places in 170 attempts. On one single night, that of 15 April, they temporarily interrupted all rail lines leading out of Bryansk. They also struck rather sharply at rail bridges. During February they successfully damaged or destroyed 12 bridges behind the Sixteenth Army, and in March in the Bryansk area on orders from the Soviet Central Staff attacked 5 bridges in force (4 of them important ones) and successfully blew up 3 bridges.Attacker: Partisan (Soviet Partisan Detachment)

2022-09-16 | (A) Mark Thompson | vs | Germans (Chip W) | Partisan win (VASL Log) | The Partisans massed their forces on the West side of the bridge against the smaller number of Germans, and placed two squads with LMGs on the East side to interdict the bulk of the German force from crossing to the East side. The Germans broke a number of Partisan units on the West side probing the defenses, but were unable to hold off the Partisans from reaching the West side victory hex, placing 4 demos, and racing a few squads across the bridge to secure the East side victory hex (albeit in broken status after running many layers of residual). During their 4th turn, the Partisans rolled < or = 5 on their 3rd DC attack, bringing down the span and sealing victory - albeit at a heavy cost.
2022-08-31 | (D) Mark Thompson | vs | Partisans (Steve B) | Partisan win | Fun 4.5 turn scenario from the Dispatches from the Bunker crew pitting my rearguard (mostly 2nd line/conscript) Germans against Steve's partisans, who must drop a span of the German RR bridge with DCs (to win immediately) or control both bridge entrance hexes (to win at Game End). Steve chose to attack both ends simultaneously, and expertly used maneuver and advance to maintain concealment, FTR me and/or ambush and eliminate me in CC to gain control of both bridge hexes. My speed bump conscript squads were just that, and I made the fatal mistake of deploying them too far forward to avail them of rout paths and FG possibilities. I also learned (the hard way of course), that the +1 hindrance / TEM of a bridge, while alluring, is a pretty good way to guarantee FTR once GO enemy units have LOS down the road, and CC against partisans (stealthy) by LAX conscripts is a very good way to get crushed. Got diced a bit on IFT and my pee-shooter 50mm mortar did nothing despite major rate tears, but got outplayed through and through.
2022-04-20 | (D) Andy Bagley | vs | Mike Grogan | Partisan win | Interesting and unusual scenario that poses problems for both sides. Do the Partisans approach from two sides to try to capture both ends of the bridge, or do they overwhelm the Germans on one side and rely on their DCs to blow the bridge - which is not guaranteed? And how should the German player balance his (very weak) forces between the two end of the bridge? My opponent here chose the first option for the Partisans, but the Germans held up well, aided by some good shooting and cunning placement of the HIP squad with MMG, and looked as though they were going to hold. Until the final turn, when a partisan leader successfully ran through defensive fire to place his DC on the bridge. He still needed a DR <6 to successfully blow it - and got a 4! So, this scenario can be dicey, but is good fun all the same.
2022-04-11 | (D) Indy Lagu | vs | Rob Oler | Partisan win | A tough one for the Partisan that I managed to lose as the Germans. With one turn left to go, I was in really good shape, but Rob's Partisans survived a crucial 12(+1) shot and took a 2(+2) shot that collapsed a key position of mine. Rob said "Better to be lucky than good," and thought the Partisans can only win by getting fortunate. I think a lot might depend upon the German setup, and would be happy to play this again as the Partisan to see if I concur. |
