Overview:
The Riva Ridge summit was secured early on the morning of 19 February. This removed the Germans' ability to observe Mt. Belvedere and direct accurate fires against attacking forces. Starting at 2300 that same evening, two battalions from the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment attacked into the gap between Riva Ridge and Mt. Belvedere and along Mt. Belvedere's eastern flank. Another battalion attacked along the lower slopes of Mt. Belvedere's southern flank. The 3rd Battalion, 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment attacked Mt. Belvedere from the south and southeast, while the 1st Battalion, 85th Mountain Infantry attacked toward Mt. Gorgolesco slightly to the east. Little opposition was initially encountered. Approximately 300 yards from the summit of Mt.
