Overview:
The early days of July 1944 were some extremely difficult for both the Allies and the Germans as the battle for Hill 112 consumed the lives of all participants. A back-and-forth battle would rage for control of the hill and adjacent towns and villages. One of the objective villages was Maltot. By July 10th, the British forces striving for control of Maltot would find themselves checked by a strong defensive effort by elements of the Germans 10th SS Panzer Division “Frundsberg” and the Tiger I’s of the Schwere Panzer Abteilung 102. In the late afternoon, the beleaguered men of the 7th Battalion Hampshire Regiment began to disengage and retreat away from Maltot. Coming to their assistance to cover the retreat were Churchill Tanks of the 9th RTR and supporting infantry of the 4th Dorsets.Attacker: German (SS) (10th SS Panzer Division 'Frundsberg' and Schwere Panzer Abteilung 102)
Defender: British (7th Hampshires, 4th Dorsets & 9th RTR)
